The recent mass shooting in Aurora, Colorado, and the one in Tucson, Arizona, in 2011 understandably draw the public’s attention to law enforcement’s preparation for mass shooting events.
But we, the public, sometimes become so consumed by the police preparation that we forget the fire and emergency medical services have an equally important role to play in mitigating the event and saving lives.
In its July 26, 2012, online post, Fire Chief magazine tells the fire service How to Prepare Your Department for Mass Shootings Like in Aurora, Colo.
The “Related Articles” at the bottom are equally interesting and informative.
Bill, It seems all level of governments from DHS to local police and fire are preparing for mass civil uprising (disobedience is the nice word.) From drones to SWAT tactics and foreign troops. I’m not a conspiracy type of guy but this type of pre-planning is on the news and in periodicals everyday.
Am I missing something here? (flash mobs to gang murders mixed with economic woes).

The public safety agencies, including police, fire, EMS, and hospitals are wise to prepare for riots, revolts, and insurrections. We’ve had them in the past and we’ll have them again.
It seems as if it’s in the news every day because the public safety agencies see “readiness” as good PR, so they give that stuff to the media. If the media need filler or if they can run it in conjunction with some more newsworthy story, they do. Readiness by itself is not news; the absence of readiness that shows up during and after a major incident is.

Another thing to consider is that YOU are responsible for your own personal safety, whether at home or outside the home. SCOTUS has ruled, twice I believe, that law enforcement has no duty to protect the individual citizen. OK fair enough. If you are so inclined get yourself a concealed carry permit and practice with your firearm of choice and be prepared to defend yourself and family. You also might want to take notice of businesses that have no firearms signs posted at their entrances. Those signs also equate to “Target Rich Environments” for criminals. These are establishments that are essentially telling you, we don’t care about your personal safety, we have a no firearms sign. Sadly, the sign didn’t work so well in Aurora, CO now did it.
