Update – School District 271 Meeting Location

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 9:31 am
schoolhouse Check the School District 271 website on Monday, January 12, 2008.  The workshop/board meeting location reported in my January 9 post may be changed to the Coeur d’Alene Library Community Room to accommodate a larger crowd. However, the Public Works Committee has a 4 p.m. meeting and the Parks & Rec Commission has a 6:30 p.m. meeting, both scheduled for the Community Room.

  1. Bill, this morning’s Press article about this meeting quoted a teacher saying she would never be willing to take a pay cut. That’s a fairly arrogant attitude in these challenging economic times. Maybe the teachers need to get in touch with reality. Look around–there are layoffs, cutbacks and pay reductions all over town. Businesses have to do these things to survive, and schools should reflect the community’s needs.

There’s a major employer here in town that recently laid off a number of people and required all remaining employees to take a pay cut: staff level a 5% cut, managers a 10% cut. The idea is that everyone needs to be in on the pain so the team can pull together to work their way out of the problem.

Maybe this is a good template for the school district.

  2. I also thought the teachers comment was arrogant! It was a definite case of open mouth and insert foot. I have thought, and continue to think, that the biggest problem with public education in the country today is the entitlement and uncompromising attitude of the teachers unions. It will also be the biggest hurdle School District 271 has to overcome to get its financial house in order and stand any chance of passing a new supplemental levy this spring.

  3. Mary and CdACanuck,

Certainly no one wants to take a pay cut, but less pay is better than no pay. Individuals will have to do exactly that which is going to be required of the school district: Cut expenditures.

It is important that the cuts in the school district are fair and equitable and are seen that way by the students, parents, faculty, and staff. Any reasonable perception of unfairness or preferential treatment will damage people’s commitment.

And the taxpayers who foot the bill.
