Who’s Who in CdA?

Filed under: General — mary @ 10:51 am

Many of our readers have asked who the power players are in CdA. That, of course, depends on your vantage point. But it is clear that certain people are highly involved in many aspects of our community. So, without resorting to gossip, we will attempt to simply list some of the most connected, active people and their roles and associations. No judgements, just facts. One person at a time, in no particular order.

Jim Elder :

  • Owner, Cricket’s Restaurant
  • Vice Chairman of LCDC (urban renewal)
  • Mayor of Fernan Village
  • President of CBNI (Concerned Businesses of North Idaho)
  • Chairman, CdA Parking Commission
  • Vice President, CASA
  • University of Idaho North Idaho Advisory Council
  • CdA Rotary member and past president
  • Campaign Committee to Elect Tom Cronin, County Commissioner
  • Jim lives outside of CdA, in Fernan.
  • Born in CdA, but lived elsewhere after high school.
  • He moved back here from California in 2000.

  1. You could also mention, if it’s known, when the person moved here and where from. That seems to be of interest to some folks, primarily people who lived here long or were born here. Like my kids.

  2. Oh, I see it now. 2000? Man makes progress, indeed. Who owned Crickets before then? I remember eating there in the early 90s.

  3. just a minor point, but he is not chairman of the parking commission.
And he was born and raised in coeur d alene.

  4. Here is another bio on Elder. Evidently he was born here. According to this site Tony Berns is also the treasurer to CASA.

  5. another confusing matter: the policy says “please do not make statements posing as fact unless you can demonstrate those facts to be true. You will be called out on this by the editors.”, but mary makes two statements posing as facts that can not possibly be “demonstrated as true”, because they are not. is that ok?

  6. CdA Press, Friday, Dec. 14, 2007: “Parking Commission Chairman Jim Elder said the city will discuss the question with the contractor who put the $50,000 study together, Rich and Associates.” Reagan, I never stated where he was born. I said he moved here from California in 2000–it is in the CASA bio on their website–look it up. You certainly are defensive. What’s your problem?

  7. I’m glad to see the feedback here. It’s good. Reagan, I believe Mary demonstrated her source and that she isn’t making up something. If you have newer information, please let us know. We welcome that.

The City’s web page lists the Parking Commission, but it does not list the current chairman. Therefore the best information we have is the article posted above.

  8. Also, not that it matters if you were born and raised in Idaho or not – it was not my choice and certainly has not got me anywhere. (Thank God, I had a brief stint in Washington where I received a decent elementary education. That’s where I learned to dot my i’s.) Nonetheless, I believe my background creditials me, having been born here, and someday I would like to be the ‘Director of the Hanging Flower Baskets’ here in CDA, so I could work in some stinging nettles for greenery and maybe surround them by nature’s own dandylions. Believe me, I could save this city some money, and right now a few hanging dandelion pots might look pretty nice.

  9. mary. i am sorry if you think i am defensive and i am not aware that i have a problem (although your statement, “What’s your problem?” does seem quite rude.) it is just that i have read some of the comments at the coeur d alene press website and they often seem to be more rumor and rudeness than anything else, so i was delighted to see this new site and the policy of facts and no personal attacks. but it appears that may not be a policy that applies to everybody.
dan, you say “The City’s web page” doesn’t list the information: in the old days we would just pick up the phone and ask someone who knows. is it so urgent to publish this information that there is no time to call and verify the facts? and dan, you rightly observe “You could also mention, if it’s known, when the person moved here and where from. That seems to be of interest to some folks, primarily people who lived here long or were born here.” it seems rather disingenuous to mention that mr. elder “moved here from California in 2000.” without also mentioning that he was born and raised here.

  10. I agree, Reagan. City Hall closes at 5:00 PM on Friday. (Actually, some say that it closes at 4:00 PM on Thursday for “Aloha Friday,” but that’s another story!) I’ll phone on Monday to find out who’s on the Parking Commission.

During my campaign it was noticed how important it is to some folks about where you are born. If you’re born in California, even if you moved to North Idaho when you were 2 months old, it matters to people. It’s also important to note who toughed it out in the 1980s and who hightailed it to greener pastures when times got hard here. Stebbijo is correct that we cannot control where we were born, but we certainly control when and why we choose to leave a community. That matters.

  11. Reagan, I’ve been gone and just read your comments this evening. I have quoted the sources of my information and they are reliable. I listed the most honest information I was able to find in a responsible manner. If you know something different to be true, you could simply write it here and let us know. But what you did was jump to attack me and imply that I was skewing information on purpose. Not so, and I don’t appreciate the attitude.

  12. I do not agree that it would make one bit of difference as to where one was born that would determine there loyalty to a community. Things change in our community for the better and for the worst. Families change, jobs change, health may change, but ones dedication is not determined by where they came from, got their education, etc.? That is just poppycock. I have met a lot of very nice people from the CdA area. I have ALSO met a quite few crooks. The same holds true for the people that I have met in other states.

I believe the mayor was born and raised in CdA. But, I could be wrong. Sorry didn’t check into the last statement before posting. To early. Wanna get some coffee. Maybe one of you can enlighten us as to Sandi’s birth place.

  13. The reason I chose to list that Jim Elder moved here in 2000 is that I think it’s important where an adult chooses to live and become part of their community. I have nothing against people who were or were not born here. It can also be terrific when people bring their experience from other areas of the country and help expand our collective view. Saying Jim moved here in 2000 was simply a report of how long he’s lived as an adult in our community. Not a plus or a minus. Sorry, Reagan, if I reacted too strongly to your comments.
