Action Alert: Monday Recall Rally!

Filed under: General — mary @ 8:05 pm

Dear Recall CdA Supporters and Volunteers,

We are delivering the more than 1600 pages of Recall Petitions to CdA City Hall tomorrow morning.  Please help us celebrate our hard work and effort by joining us for a Rally as the petitions are carried in.  It will be much like the Rally we had when we filed the Recall last April 4th, a very long two months ago. (Let’s hope it doesn’t snow tomorrow like it did back then!)

We will meet in front of City Hall, in the upper parking lot at 8:30 am.  We will have some signs but you can bring your own if you want.

Let’s congratulate each other on the teamwork and dedication of more than 100 volunteers during this process.  This has truly been a community effort.  My thanks to each and every one of you!

We need to have 4,311 valid signatures at the end of “Phase One” of this Recall, in order to get it on the ballot.  We will be delivering well over 5,311 signatures tomorrow, which will then be examined and certified by the County Elections Dept.  We do not know how everything will turn out, but we’ve all done our best.

Please bring everyone you know who wants to participate:  kids, friends, neighbors, etc.

See you tomorrow morning,

Mary

  1. Just a quick note – Congratulations!

Wish I could be there, out of town this week but with you in spirit. Getting to good government is hard work, but worth it.

    Again, congrats and thank you.

  2. We learned late last night that one of our volunteers and friends, Marv Lekstrum, passed away last night at KMC. As we’re gathering today to turn in the petitions, please remember Marv. Thanks.

  4. As we move forward hopefully to an election-how can we reach out to the public to encourage them to vote?

  5. Once the certification process is complete, the campaign for the Recall Election will begin. We can expect that those officials and their supporters will wage an aggressive campaign, just like any other election. Let us continue to conduct ourselves with respect and professionalism as we did during the signature phase. If there is to be criticism because of campaign mischief and bad behavior, let it be directed to those opposed to the Recall. Let’s stay on the high road.

  6. Thanks, Gary. I have not seen a Recall on a ballot before-does it also give the option to keep them in office?

  7. After I read my question about the ballot-I realized what the answer is after I hit submit comment.

  9. Fiftysmtg,

It’s still a good question. Here’s what the statute says:

34-1708. Form of recall ballot. The ballot at any recall election shall be headed “RECALL BALLOT” and on the ballot shall be printed in not more than two hundred (200) words the reason for demanding the recall of the officer named in the recall petition, and in not more than two hundred (200) words the officer’s justification of his course in office. Then the question of whether the officer should be recalled shall be placed on the ballot in a form substantially similar to the following:
    □ FOR recalling ….. who holds office of ….
    □ AGAINST recalling ….. who holds office of ….

  10. Thank you, Bill. I would like to help with the Recall campaign-can you point me in the right direction?

  11. Hi to you all, It is a very good day. We had a sunny morning and about 75 of our supporters gathered at city hall for our rally. We had signs and smiles. At 9:00 am, former County Prosecutor Glenn Walker accompanied Frank and Bill into city hall as they delivered the petitions.

Frank called me an hour or so ago to tell me that, as of this morning at about 11:00 am, all the petition pages were delivered to Cliff Hayes at the County. The whole procedure at city hall went smoothly, he said. One person, previously contacted multiple times, showed up to remove their name. It was not a problem.

So onward we go. Now Cliff Hayes and his staff have until 1:00 on Tuesday, June 19th to certify the more than 21,000 signatures. Our final number was somewhere around 5, 342 each. Cliff Hayes will then deliver them back to the city, where Susan Weathers will tally the number of signatures on each page that have been ok’d by the County.

One way or the other, the totals will be announced at 5:00pm on the 19th. Then one hour later, the city council has their meeting. That should be interesting.

So thank you for all your support and help; for donating and conferring and going door-to-door and waving signs in the heat and the rain. This has been an incredible team effort.

    Have a wonderful, sunny day.

  12. Fiftysmtg,

How we proceed will be guided by the final valid signature count determined by Kootenai County Clerk Cliff Hayes. As Mary noted, we should know on Tuesday, June 19th about 5 p.m. if we have sufficient valid signatures to cause the Mayor or one or more of the three council members to be on a recall election ballot. So for the next few days, most of the volunteers will be resting up and hopefully enjoying nice weather.

Please be assured that if one or more are on the recall ballot, there will be plenty of work to be done, and Recall CdA will be eager to help community members share it! We’ll be putting more specific information here to encourage people to get involved and more completely answer your question.

For everyone who signed the petitions and for everyone from surrounding communities who couldn’t sign but stopped in at the office or at a signing station to give us your encouragement, here’s a message: If you want to see who made 5,342 signatures happen on the petitions, just look in the mirror. Thank you!

  13. Are the recall petitions public record at this moment? There is a post over on Huckleberries stating, Anti-Recall organizers Sara Meyer and Jennifer Drake have found 4 petitions signed by Rodney Bitterman…

    Comment by KimKnerl — June 11, 2012 @ 3:46 pm

  14. KimKnerl,

Yes, at the moment they were accepted as filed by the City Clerk, they became a public record. But to make your comment perfectly clear, Rodney Bitterman probably signed as the signature collector, not as an elector. The person who collected the signatures, whether s/he collected one or 20 on the page, had to sign at the bottom of each page in the presence of a notary public. If Rodney turned in four petitions with elector signatures, then there better be four petitions with his notarized signature at the bottom.
