Honor & Hubris

Mary Souza’s Newsletter

We have so much to be thankful for on this auspicious date of 11-11-11!  The Chinese believe eleven is the number of enlightenment and, in this crazy world, we could all use some wisdom.

First, on this Veteran’s Day, let’s honor the service of all the military men and women who have devoted themselves to safeguarding our freedom.  They are the foundation of this country and greatly deserve our thanks.

Secondly, on a personal note, my honor and thanks go to my wonderful husband as we celebrate our 33rd wedding anniversary today.  He is a treasure and saying “I do” was our best decision ever.  (more…)

Woo Hoo!

Filed under: General — mary @ 10:19 am

Dan and Steve did it!  Dan beat George Sayler by 974 votes, and Steve unseated John Bruning by 1420.  Neither race was ever close.

Here’s what Dan told the Press: “”I would like to say the public finally got their vote on McEuen Field, and they spoke loud and clear… The council got a new direction.”

Steve said he will focus on a vote for McEuen, reducing the budget and reigning in LCDC, just as he promised in his campaign.

What are your thoughts and feelings this morning?

After Today’s Voting, What’s Next?

What happens after today’s city-fire district elections?

The next important date is Thursday, November 17, 2011, at 1:30 p.m.  That is when the Kootenai County Board of County Commissioners is scheduled to canvass today’s elections.

To better understand the function and importance of the election canvass, see Chapter 13 of “Election Management Guidelines” published by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission. (more…)

City’s Stormwater Fee = Unconstitutional Tax

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 11:52 am

The City of Lewiston, Idaho, passed an ordinance creating a stormwater utility and stormwater fee for the operation and maintenance of the City’s stormwater system.  Five political subdivisions of the state challenged that ordinance, claiming that the stormwater “fee” was, in fact, an unconstitutional tax that could only have been passed by the state legislature.  The Idaho Supreme Court agreed with the plaintiffs and held that the City’s stormwater fee was an unconstitutional tax.   The case is Lewiston Independent School District et al v. City of Lewiston.

This case is important, because the City of Coeur d’Alene also imposes a stormwater fee with its utility bill. (more…)

Obama-Sayler Connection?

Filed under: General — mary @ 10:56 am

Is there relevance to the connection, in our local city council race, of a candidate’s support for the U.S. President?  I would say YES, and here’s why:  A few weeks ago, council candidate George Sayler said, at a public forum, that he thinks Obama has been “good for Idaho”.  This statement tells me that George is completely out of touch with the real world of our local economy.

The Obama administration policies, especially banking regulations,  have been terrible for small business and have contributed greatly to the closure of local enterprises, ultimately costing  jobs.  And in the midst of this severe economic downturn nationally, what has the Obama administration focused its time and effort on?…Not helping to create jobs by reducing spending and lowering taxes, which are proven methods to help business investment and jobs.  No, the President used his power, in the midst of a severe recession, to push a massive spending program called Obamacare, (pass it before you read it) which has been another major job killer.  (more…)

Many More Questions to Be Asked

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 7:38 am

[

One would expect that with criminal charges being filed against three former and present officials of Pennsylvania State University, colleges and universities should ask, “Could this happen on our campus?”  The “this” is far more than a college football coach allegedly sexually abusing children.  “This” includes officials of the university being accused of downplaying and ignoring reports of the alleged abuse and those same officials then allegedly lying to officials about it in furtherance of the coverup.  (more…)

Blackmail or “Welcome to Idaho”?

Filed under: Probable Cause — Tags: — Bill @ 7:29 am

Suppose a public official in Idaho receives a communication that says, “If you don’t resign, we’ll reveal embarrassing information about you.”  If you were that official, what would you do?

According to the occasionally accurate Idaho Statesman newspaper, that is exactly what happened to  Star councilman Tom Erlebach.  The circumstances are reported in a story headlined Star threat targeted City Councilman Tom Erlebach.

Suppose the councilman is an incumbent candidate for re-election and his detractors want to replace him.  Further, suppose the “embarrassing information” involves the councilman’s family members?  Would (or should) that influence your opinion of the councilman?  And even if the “threat” is legal in Idaho, what would your opinion be of the people who tried to use it?

Blackmail?   Or business as usual in Idaho?

SIX Weeks of Paid Vacation!

Filed under: The City's Pulse — mary @ 1:51 pm

Mary Souza’s Newsletter

I almost fell off my chair when I realized that the City of CdA gives  SIX weeks of paid vacation after employees have been on the job over 10 years.  Doesn’t that sound European?  Don’t the French mandate that everyone have six weeks paid vacation each year…how’s that entitlement working out for them?

But the golden benefits don’t stop with a mere SIX weeks.  Goodness, no! You have to add sick time of THREE weeks per year, for everyone, even the newbies.  And then add in ELEVEN paid holidays, for everyone of course.  And there’s more…    (more…)

Hypocrisy from Kennedy…no surprise

Filed under: General — mary @ 11:55 am

The Season of our Discontent
by Jeff Ward, KCRR President

The sight of multi-millionaire propagandist Michael Moore communing with the hippies at Occupy Wall Street conjures up a single word. Hypocrisy.  Hypocrisy of the highest order.  For Mr. Disingenuous to egg on the scions of the eastern wealth to rail against the corporations that provided them with their smart phones, iPads and designer stocking caps would be laughable, if the liberal media wasn’t eating it up and designating the astro-turfed socialist slackers as a leftist equivalent to Tea Party.

Hypocrisy is not only at home among the “99%” but here in the wilderness of North Idaho. Yesterday on a local political blog, Coeur d’Alene’s own liberal Democrat “Yosemite Sam”, City Councilman Mike Kennedy, launched this election’s attack on the Reagan Republicans, Ron Lahr and myself.  Like elections past, Kennedy could not argue with the Reagan Republican-endorsed candidates Dan Gookin and Steve Adams because they are on the right side of the issues and Kennedy is on the wrong side, denying the citizens of Coeur d’Alene the right to vote on McEuen Field, supporting ridiculous pay increases for over-paid bureaucrats and refusing oversight on the LCDC.  No Mr. Kennedy was true to form and attacked the messengers not the message.
