He Never Called For a Public Meeting!

Filed under: General — mary @ 2:38 pm

City Councilman Mike Kennedy was arguing with a citizen about the need for public input on the Ed. Corridor issue. It happened today, on a different public forum. The citizen wrote: “…there is a growing public perception that deals are being made, plans are being laid and there’s not yet been public input into the project.”

Mike Kennedy responded with “What do you define as “public input”? Because I get dramatically more input at Costco, the post office, and by email than I ever do at official public hearings and meetings….Public input comes in all forms, and I get a great deal of it just going about my day in town. Should that input be discounted because it isn’t delivered with a 5-minute time limit on camera?… In reality, though, the corridor has been only talk until very recently because the land wasn’t available. Now it apparently will be available and soon, and there will be a lot of decisions to be made. I think the Education Corridor is an exciting vision, idea, and just now maybe – hopefully a real future project. Marshall Chesrown should get a lot of credit for allowing this opportunity to be out there by offering to sell the land at his cost.”

Mike Kennedy never once suggested a public meeting would or should be held. Who is he representing… the citizens?

Art and politics are an odious combination. I say that for several very good reasons.

Has Your Car Been Inspected?

No, you probably have never taken your car into an official Idaho Vehicle Inspection station. But you will be! Soon! And it’s going to cost you $20.

I have to go outside sometime this morning. I have to shovel my sidewalks. Again. But before I do that, it has to stop snowing. Again. Here’s your generic “I’m inside today, so I think I’ll go visit OpenCdA and complain about the snow” topic.

Tax Man!

The City’s Pulse Newsletter

By Mary Souza, March 27, 2008

thumb_beatles_003.jpg The wonderful humorist, Mark Twain wrote that “The only difference between a tax man and a taxidermist is that the taxidermist leaves the skin.” I feel his pain. And there could be much more pain ahead for those in our area. Not only is our federal and state income tax day right around the corner, but our school district is asking for a $31.1 million dollar levy and there’s talk of another jail bond coming soon as well. Pouring salt on this taxation wound, North Idaho College is considering the use of forgone taxes to purchase land for the Education Corridor. They hold the right to $2.6 million in foregone taxes.

Now, as voters, we have a voice on the school levy and jail bond issue, but when it comes to foregone taxes, we’ve got nothing. And what in the heck are foregone taxes, anyway? Most people have no idea, so let’s go over the basics.

Here’s a great explanation of foregone taxes, written by my friend Dan Gookin: (more…)

Periodically I link readers to the Internal Revenue Service’s Examples of Public Corruption Crimes Investigations, a report updated quarterly.   The IRS is not the only federal law enforcement agency involved in public corruption crimes investigation.

Does Anyone Really Know?

Filed under: Observations — Dan Gookin @ 9:39 am

As supporters of open government, we at OpenCDA are often criticized for not getting our facts straight. We try. But our job is made nearly impossible when the government we investigate fails to supply us with consistent information. Take for example — and an obscure example — the City of Coeur d’Alene’s current property valuation.

We Are Not Alone…

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 8:32 am

Sometimes we in Coeur d’Alene think that waste, abuse, and outright fraud in the use of public money only occurs in Coeur d’Alene and Kootenai County.

No, it’s an international problem.  Read this post by Tim Bousquet titled Public money, private players.  It appeared on “The Coast” – Halifax’s website.

Read Bousquet’s post and see if you can name Coeur d’Alene and Kootenai County’s equivalents of Halifax 2014.
