The LCDC is a Slush Fund

Filed under: Observations — Dan Gookin @ 8:06 am

Yesterday a theory of mine was proven true. I have often said that the LCDC exists as a pot of money — a privy purse — that the Mayor and City Council can use to pay for things without public scrutiny, input, or approval. With the LCDC’s funding of the City Park Police Bunker, that assumption has been proven true.

To follow up on the Library money discussion we had here a couple days ago, I received info back from the city. The Finance Director, Troy Tymeson, emailed me the following answer to my question about whether the city had loaned the library money: (more…)

Open Session, Tuesday

Filed under: Open Session — mary @ 1:16 pm

Steve Briggs from the CdA School District called me yesterday. He’s working on getting the information I requested about the remodel costs for Lakes Middle School and the estimated costs for a new Lakes building. I appreciate that he contacted me to clarify my request and the details of what I am seeking. The info will be interesting.

Any questions or comments on this or other subjects?

City Park Cop Shop & The Master Plan

Filed under: Observations — Dan Gookin @ 3:30 pm

Call it the vision thing. Every city should have one. Politicians love talking about them. The question is whether that vision, that written master plan required by the State, is actually followed or brutally ignored.

Open Session, St. Paddy’s Day!

Filed under: Open Session — mary @ 2:07 pm

Top of the mornin’ to you” is an Irish greeting.  We’ve all heard that before.  But the answer to the greeting is something new to me.  The answer is supposed to be: “And the rest of the day to yourself!”

Someone told me about that over the weekend, so I though I’d pass it along.

Questions? Comments? Issues?

This cartoon is based on the story headlined “Request Denied – We Just Want to Know What Happened to Our Son” published April 23, 2007, in the Springfield, Illinois, State Journal-Register online.  Of course, that was in Illinois.  It could never happen here …

Rep. Sayler & the LCDC

Filed under: Observations — Dan Gookin @ 7:26 pm

Last week, 4th District Representative George Sayler spoke out against HB616, the anti-shoestring bill before the Idaho House. I admit that Mr. Sayler made an impassioned plea against the proposed law, which would have added accountability and openness to Idaho’s Urban Renewal Agencies. He spoke out twice against it, and appeared to be the legislation’s main opponent. George did a good job in defeating the bill. Now let’s look at some key political contributions to his 2006 campaign.
