Reporting From the Field…

restroom-stalls Reporting from the middle stall, one of OpenCdA.com’s usually reliable (but occasionally just-off-the-mark) sources tells me that shortly after being sworn in this week as Kootenai County Prosecuting Attorney, Barry McHugh proceeded to swear in all his deputies as deputy prosecutors.  He then reportedly brought Kootenai County Legal Services back into the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney.

Mary’s note:  The following nasty rant is by CdA City Councilman Mike Kennedy and was posted today on a Spokane-based blog in response to the newsletter I sent out yesterday.  Let’s all remember that Mike and his wife were just blessed last Saturday with their 7th child, a sweet little boy.  Mike is probably not getting enough sleep–I remember those days.  (more…)

The City’s Pulse Newsletter
By Mary Souza

Timing is critical in comedy as well as finance.  The use of public money for a well-intended project can turn a good idea into a bad joke when the timing is off.  And right now it has.  (more…)

An Act of Civil Obedience

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 9:53 am
tiananmen-square-the-unknown-rebel This morning’s Coeur d’Alene Press dutifully reported the impassioned “Don’t gut the school district activities budget” speeches many citizens delivered to the School District 271 Board of Trustees (Board) at its meeting on January 12, 2009. What the newspaper didn’t report was the one act of civil obedience by a very courageous citizen.

What is Education?

Filed under: General — mary @ 8:38 am

210px-basketball_game Last night at the CdA school board’s special meeting, the place was full of people supporting  sports & activities programs at both high schools.  They were there to specifically ask/demand that the district retain an Athletic Director in each high school building, even if they must be reduced to part-time positions.

People lined up  to speak to the board about the ADs, but also about the role of sports and other extra curricular activities in education.  Do you think activities are important in the educational experience?  If so, how much?  Would you cut them all before cutting any academic program?  What should the district do?

Any other thoughts on this or other subjects?

Update – School District 271 Meeting Location

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 9:31 am
schoolhouse Check the School District 271 website on Monday, January 12, 2008.  The workshop/board meeting location reported in my January 9 post may be changed to the Coeur d’Alene Library Community Room to accommodate a larger crowd. However, the Public Works Committee has a 4 p.m. meeting and the Parks & Rec Commission has a 6:30 p.m. meeting, both scheduled for the Community Room.
