Commenting on Mary’s post titled Campaign Favors Already?, reader “citizen” said, “I too would like to know more about the Chesrown parcels of land. Does anyone know the purchasing price. It should be part of the public record….right?”

Here is a link to the lease agreement between North Idaho College and the North Idaho College Foundation.

This morning’s Coeur d’Alene Press carried a letter to the editor by Larry Spencer.  The letter is headlined ED CORRIDOR:  Price Jacking?.  It discusses the purchase price. (more…)

Complaining to the FCC

Mary’s post titled Campaign Favors Already? talked about Councilman Kennedy’s campaign statements made on a local radio station, KVNI.  She asked if Kennedy’s campaign finance report would have to reflect the value of that air time.

Another question might be, what obligations does a radio station licensed by the Federal Communications Commission have with regard to political advertising?  What recourse, if any, does a citizen have if he believes an FCC licensee (KVNI in this case) has violated federal law, FCC rules, and policies. Campaign Favors Already?

Filed under: General — mary @ 10:22 am

Kvni_logoAn alert reader reports that City Councilman Mike Kennedy spoke for a public service segment on KVNI this morning, where a city official is given free radio time to discuss local CdA news.  Gosh, we’ve had some important city news lately, like the police lawsuit, the city legal department withholding public records information, the Planning and Zoning Commission giving special permission to Bellerive for parking lots, and, speaking of Cheshrown, that the Mill site was purchased without him as part of the deal but he still ended up being given several acres of prime land.

So, with all this to discuss, what did Mike Kennedy talk about on this free PUBLIC SERVICE time?  He did not discuss any of the “issues” above, he painted a rosy picture of all things lovely in CdA, then again announced his campaign for re-election!   And the radio station allowed it.  The fact that the city sent an  an already-openly-announced candidate to fill the public service spot for them is improper, and the fact that the radio station did not stop him from using the time to further his own campaign is akin to a special favor.

Will Mike show the value of the donation on his Sunshine Report?  Let’s see…I hear KVNI’s rate is $15 for 30 seconds…..Mike spoke for 10 minutes….

Do As I Say, Not As I Do

gif The City’s Pulse Newsletter, by Mary Souza

The recent moves by the City of CdA make no sense to me.  In what appears a twisted contradiction, the city refused to provide key information to the Idaho Freedom Foundation, claiming it must protect identities, yet at almost the same time, an email of election questions sent from a citizen to the CdA City Clerk, was “leaked” to an online Spokane gossip blog within an hour of its receipt at City Hall.   (more…)

110_F_15506809_fFaMBxbYzlC5x9LRTx053IlVtTovY6a4_PXP My relatives in Seattle say they are melting and I’m sure folks around here will be flocking to the lakes, Art on the Green and the Street Fair downtown.  Any thoughts, questions or comments on this first weekend of August?
