Branding

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 1:27 pm

This morning’s Coeur d’Alene Press ran an article headlined Corporate branding considered for state parks.

You know, corporate branding may be an idea whose time has come.

What Coeur d’Alene institutions and buildings would you like to see wearing a particular brand?  Just to get you started, the first ones that occurred to me were the Ex-Lax Coeur d’Alene City Hall and the Bernie Madoff Kroc Center.

Feel free to add your own.

JohnA: “LCDC does not levy taxes”!

Filed under: General — mary @ 12:35 pm

Happy Monday, JohnA.  You can’t be serious,  trying to say that LCDC does not increase our taxes!  Sure they are not a taxing district and don’t levy taxes themselves, but they divert taxes and in doing so they cause ALL the property taxes in Kootenai County to go higher.  The highest rates, of course, are for those living within the city of CdA.

Here’s JohnA’s comment just a short while ago:

Susie, please inform your downtown business owner that if he (or she) hadn’t paid those taxes to LCDC, they would have gone to the other districts on his tax bill. Remember, please, that LCDC does not levy taxes. They get taxes from the increase in the owner’s property value since LCDC was created in 1997, and those taxes are based on the budgets set by all of those other districts on his tax bill. It is a diversion of taxes to LCDC that he (or she) would have to pay in any event, and only because their property increased in value. Thanks.

Kathy Sims Hits the Bullseye!

Filed under: General — mary @ 8:57 am

Kathy Sims wrote a terrific My Turn Column for this morning’s CdA Press, where she hit the target on an important but elusive subject.  She addresses the NIC board of trustees’ attempt to bypass the constitutional right of the voters to decide whether NIC, as a public entity, can go into long term debt.  I’m thrilled to read her clear, no-nonsense view of this fiasco, and am very glad she’s going to Boise to represent us.

Great job, Kathy!

“The Hammer” Facing Five to Life

According to the November 24, 2010, Austin American-Statesman story headlined DeLay convicted of laundering corporate money into political donations, former Speaker of the US House of Representatives Tom DeLay (R-Texas) has been convicted of money laundering. He will be sentenced on December 20 and could receive a prison sentence in excess of five years. This article contains a good trial timeline of the violations going back to 2001. (more…)

CdA Winter of '08-'09

It’s beginning to feel a lot like…oops, wrong holiday!  We’re starting deep winter early this year, but we still have a LOT to be thankful for.  Can you name some?  I’m thinking it’s great that we have a new State Representative in Kathy Sims.  I’m glad she will be going to Boise to help sort out some of this craziness.  Did you know that there’s a suggested urban renewal bill which openly allows board members to buy, own and profit from the development in their districts?  Kathy and others will be standing up against this arrogant misuse of public authority.

For Military History Buffs

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 7:37 am

For those of you who might be military history buffs, an unclassified 168-page US Army history of  military intelligence is available online.  It is titled The Evolution of American Military Intelligence.  It was published in May 1973 by Marc B. Powe and Edward Wilson, U.S. Army Intelligence Center and School, Fort Huachuca, AZ. It is reasonably accurate although lacking detail.   Possibly that’s why it was used in the MI Officer Course?

The Army MI Branch insignia is shown.  Here is a link to the “official” meaning of the insignia.

A somewhat less official version never approved by Fort Fumble was “The Shafted Pansy.”  Our unofficial motto was, “First to eat, last to fight, and never stand in the rain.”  Lest you think I am being unduly disrespectful, read the citation for  1LT George Sisler.

Missed It By That Much…

[Sunday’s Coeur d’Alene Press editorial headlined Faulty laws cost us all almost hit the 10-ring.  It was soooooo close.

[The Press correctly pointed out that Idaho’s election administration laws desperately need to be re-examined and updated.  We’ve been saying [that for months now.  But where the Press missed the bullseye was in failing to recognize and editorialize about how the entire election contest [lawsuit and its associated costs could have been completely avoided.    (more…)

[Turn on your computer sound and listen to this song.

[How many times is Idaho and one of its towns mentioned?

[Which towns in northern Idaho?  Southern Idaho?

Today’s Washington Post article about the ongoing federal public corruption probe in Prince George’s County, Maryland, shows exactly how that local government has been corrupted by political patronage.  The article is headlined Arrests in Pr. George’s probe expose ties between politicians, liquor officials.  It is a detailed account of how political patronage is connected with public corruption in local government.   (more…)

Open Session, Weekend

Filed under: Open Session — mary @ 4:04 pm

Here’s a touch of the tropics when we might need one as the snow starts to fly.

I’m not thrilled about several things going on around town.  What are your thoughts about NIC paying off the “lease” (purchase) on their backdoor deal to buy the Mill site without a vote of the public?

What about the LCDC getting into the business of subsidizing residential houses for middle class families?

Any other issues, concerns or ideas?
