Open Session, Tuesday

Remember the snow we had a year ago? I’m not ready for that again yet.

With all the election hubub, maybe we need an Open Session to air out the remaining bits and pieces.  Or unnoticed issues.  Or new questions & observations.

What’s on your mind?

  1. I have two sort of hot button gripes if you will.
    1. We live in northern Idaho. We do not live in North Idaho which would denote a separate state. Yet almost everywhere, including the Press, it is called North Idaho. It is just ignorant.

    2. Personally, I would love to be able to remove Bloem, Goodlander and Kennedy…maybe Woody. But it is just not practical. Even if a petition were successful, the remaining requirements to bring it to the vote would be time consuming. Possibly as long as two years. By then we can vote them out of office. To continue to demand a recall shows a lack of understanding of the subject.

  2. rocherau, I guess that first one is a hot button. I think it is a local colloquialism just like the phrase I have never heard except around here,”these ones”. Ignorant as it may be, it is.

  3. I remember, when the longtime locals would refer to ‘Hayden’as ‘Hayden Lake’, irrespective of the lake being there.

    Comment by kageman — November 15, 2011 @ 5:04 pm

  4. Would you vote for a recall? Of whom: Mayor only, Mayor and all three incumbents? (not Ron) Do you think 4300 people in CdA would sign a petition of recall?

  5. I call the area north Idaho or North Idaho all of the time – it’s because there have been rumors of splitting the state for years – and it is a local colloquialism, I guess. It is what you feel. However, it certainly does not depict “ignorance.” That is a bit of a high horse attitude riding on too fancy of a saddle, I might say. Sometimes, I call a creek a “crick” – which makes some folks cringe. I usually do that on purpose for shock value, it creditials my roots which I sometimes pronouce wrong – like it ruts. You are in north Idaho, ya know – if you don’t like wolves then some folks should just move to New York or downtown Ssn Francisco.

    Comment by Stebbijo — November 15, 2011 @ 6:08 pm

  6. Sometimes, I type really fast and spell stuff wrong -“like in ruts” or San. Oh,well – it’s not like I am writing a research paper or anything on this here site. But, I am not too bad at html.

    Comment by Stebbijo — November 15, 2011 @ 6:16 pm

  7. I would like to shoot numerous wolves. Well at least a number equal to the number of wolf tags that I have purchased. Does that qualify me as liking wolves to the extent necessary to not have to move to New York or downtown San Francisco?

    Comment by Joe Six-Pack — November 15, 2011 @ 7:55 pm

  8. LOL – Nope, Mr. Joe Six-Pack. I was coining an analogy – most likely better stated as, “If you don’t like north Idaho, move back to New York or San Francisco.”

If you get any of those bloody wolves, send me a photo.

Bloody: Chiefly British Slang Used as an intensive: “Everyone wants to have a convict in his bloody family tree” (Robert Hughes).

  9. Now I am really confused, what do the dang redcoats have to do with shootin wolves?

  10. I thought we were civilized adults on this blog. Apparently not all of us.

Mary, IMO it would be a great thing if Bloem and Co. simply disappeared. As for a recall, like everything, it is a process and by the time the process was complete it would probably be election time anyway. Do I think a petition would be successful, absolutely. I’m talking about the entire process. It might be interesting to start a petition to poke at Bloem. I read a great description (of someone else) this morning. It is perfect for Bloem….”unearned arrogance”. That being said, it is my experience that those who have earned the right to be arrogant, absolutely are not.

  11. Now Joe that’s a “colonialism”

    Comment by Ancientemplar — November 16, 2011 @ 8:42 am

  12. Good point, Rochereau, but I don’t think anyone ever earns the right to be arrogant.

  14. Back to other controversial and very poignant topics – the ignorant North Idaho dilemma. We have this local college here – it’s called North Idaho College! I know! I wonder if they should change their name, because I do believe that is another reason why some of us think we are separated from the rest of the state. This seriously needs to be looked at. I wonder what Pricilla Bell thinks of it all – doesn’t she have a PhD or something? How does she feel working for an ignorant college? Is she ignorant, too? Is North Idaho College just one big ignorant institution? How about the board of trustees? They must be really stupid? LOL – this made my day. Thanks for the laugh. I never thought of everyone here as so damn ignorant they could not name their own college correctly … and I thought it was just me.:-)

    Comment by Stebbijo — November 16, 2011 @ 1:01 pm

  15. I called NIC and talked with their vice president of community relations, John Martin. It needed to be grammatically correct to satisfy my argument.

We are also a direction as in north. According to Mr. Martin the Governor wants us called Northern Idaho because it represents unity. There is a Southern and Western college in Idaho. But, there is no real pressure to change the name. He does not want folks to think of us like North and South Dakota. Additionally, before we had the college we had the community college which was first, so I guess if the board of education is okay with it, then it’s okay. After all, we are in the north direction of the state.

    It is also a “tradition.”

    Comment by Stebbijo — November 16, 2011 @ 1:51 pm

  16. Oopps for got this. It’s the Governor of Idaho putting on the pressure to call us Northern Idaho because he wants unity so folks don’t think of like the Dakotas.

  17. Poor stebbijo, so sad, so predictable.

Mary, when I say “earned”, I’m speaking of people who have greatly benefitted humanity (for instance). People who continually contribute in meaningful ways. It could be said that they have earned the right to arrogance. But these people are generally the most humble. On no universe do I consider arrogance an acceptable mode of behavior or a commendable attribute.

    Comment by rochereau — November 16, 2011 @ 2:23 pm

  18. I agree Rochereau and understand your point. Arrogance is unseemly on anyone but it’s intolerable for those elected to public service.

    Comment by mary — November 16, 2011 @ 3:02 pm

  19. rochereau, I am sure you are much nicer in person, and I feel sorry for you because you don’t know where you live. Sad. You probably think you have the right to be arrogant and you have earned that narcissistic behavior. Very sad, indeed.

    Comment by Stebbijo — November 16, 2011 @ 3:04 pm

  20. Please keep your comments to the topics of discussion, not personal insults. Arguing about the use and meaning of the word North vs Northern does not mean a person is confused about their location. It also does not mean a person is ignorant. And it’s really not important in the long run! Let’s bury the hatchet and change the subject, shall we?

Has anyone read the new book on government corruption called “Throw Them All Out”, by Peter Schweitzer? I was just reading about one section on the bailouts of certain companies and these comments jumped off the page and reminded me of our Coeur d’Alene government:
“…taxpayers’ money flowing into the pet projects of rich venture capital investors…not average citizens….taxpayer money being sent to wealthy investors to bail them out of risky investments—does this sound familiar to anyone?”

Here are several links to articles about the book:

  21. I think the distinction of North Idaho vs. Northern Idaho is very important and I will fight to the death to uphold it’s integrity even if I might be the last remaining glimmer of hope that any exists.

I might bury the hatchet if rochereau buys me a beer, but we would probably argue over that, too. He/she probably drinks Miller.

I am reading the Hunger Games – it’s a simple fifth grade book akin to Ray Bradbury’s – Child Buyer. Carefully prepared mice are a delicacy. I am reading the book so I can enjoy the movie. That sometimes helps.

  22. Mary, RE: Comment 20, a retired AUSA wrote a letter to his son on moral decisions in light of Penn State. Down in the letter was this very accurate assessment of institutions (like our City government, LCDC, NIC Board of Trustees) by an FBI psychological profiler who specializes in child sex crimes:

“It takes enormous strength to put one’s moral integrity over your personal inclination to protect fellow colleagues who have committed malfeasance, or criminal activity. The FBI, like Penn State and the Catholic Church, are entities that allows their personnel to report allegations up a chain of command but those in positions of power or change, fail to take immediate or strong actions. It simply boils down to the fact that those in power have a stronger desire to preserve the reputation of their institution, than taking the road of truth or justice. Entities like Penn State, the Catholic Church and the FBI all share something in common; they operate in an insular world where rules or laws that apply to everyone else, do not apply to them.”

    Comment by Bill — November 16, 2011 @ 4:19 pm

  23. WOW, today’s threads have been fun. I don’t know about anyone else but I was writing tongue in cheek. I have thoroughly enjoyed the lightness amongst all the serious subjects we have been writing about for the past 5 plus months. I personally don’t care what this portion of the state is called. I refer to North Idaho as “North Idaho”, regardless what the governor wants. Its just my independent self expression and I don’t really care what other people that I talk to think about it. I enjoyed the jousting. Thanks Stebbio and rochereau.

After all this was an open session, right?

  24. “Do you think 4300 people in CdA would sign a petition of recall”?

Mary, of course they would esp.right after the majority on the city council voted against letting the CDA city residents have an Advisory vote on McEuen.

Some seem to think that Woody, could be the weak link on the council. I think MikeK could be that weak link.
While, I’m not suggesting he would ever vote for an Ad.vote, he could abstain or make his own motion to the city council concerning the McEuen Field issue etc. It depends on what Edinger,Gookin and Adams do.
    We all know MikeK has flip-flopped;
first saying he would follow Ron’s lead on McEuen, then after getting elected voting for the McEuen Park Proposal. He barely, held his seat last time and knows this could be the issue that determines if he’s re-elected or not in 2013.

    Comment by kageman — November 16, 2011 @ 8:52 pm

  25. That is interesting kageman. I have always thought that Mike did as he was told by his handlers. He works for a heavy hitter and is dependant on him for his living. I think he wants to eventually go to the state legislature. I do find it amusing that he is swinging in the breeze. Follow instructions and possibly lose the next election or do the right thing and possibly lose his livlihood. Either one or both (Mike/Woody) must flip flop.

Bill, thanks for publishing that quote. It certainly is spot on! Re Penn State, they were not only proctecting the institution, they were protecting their own best interests. That tragedy has too many layers to disect here. But I have tried to live my life by a very simple principle. Right is right and wrong is…wrong!

    stebbijo, I drink Carlsberg.

    Comment by rochereau — November 17, 2011 @ 9:38 am

  26. @rochereau

A what? A beer called Carlsberg? Where do you have to go to get that? Denmark? I had to look it up. However, it does not surprize me that you are most likely a beer snob.

    Beer Snob

The unfair term given to those who enjoy high quality beer. They are often accused of being snobbish and looking down on others, or are thought merely to drink beer of higher quality than Bud, Miller, and Coors to feel or act superior to their peers. A better term is beer connoisseur.

Geesh, why can’t some people around here just be normal and drink Budweiser? 😉

    Comment by Stebbijo — November 17, 2011 @ 6:18 pm

  27. Budweiser? YUCK! That is as bad as listening to, dare I say, COUNTRY MUSIC! Bunch o ignorant hicks. lol 🙂
