In the Beholder’s Eye

Councilman Deanna Goodlander

[

Coeur d’Alene, Idaho’s imitation news/views/skewspaper, the Coeur d’Alene Press, published an article this morning in which Coeur d’Alene city councilman Deanna Goodlander offered her opinion of Recall CdA supporters.   Quoting from the article: “She [Goodlander] said it will be nice not having signature gatherers waving signs on street corners anymore, which doesn’t make an attractive sight for visitors who flock to Coeur d’Alene in the summer.”

Let’s consider that.

[

[

Which is the more attractive sight for visitors:

This …

Or this?

How about this …

Or this?

Councilman Goodlander must find her fellow citizens rather than the signs to be unattractive, because a drive down Coeur d’Alene’s main drag, Sherman Avenue, this morning showed quite a few touristy businesses had “Decline to Sign” signs.  Here’s a sample:

Hey, Deanna … If it makes you feel better, think of us sign-waving signature gatherers as street art!

Welcome to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho!

  1. Interesting to note that the Cowles Family owned Q6 is now giving DFO face time on TV to go along with their blatantly slanted Huckleberries Blog.

Just what are the Cowles up to? Do they have a dog in the McEuen or LCDC fight?

    Enquiring minds want to know.

  2. It goes without saying that I would never shop at johannes. Has always looked junky to me. Art Spirit is just too off the wall wierd. All Things Irish, junk for tourists. Is that stuff on the street considered art? Now Susies dog is natures art and class as well!

  3. CDAShenanigans,

The Cowles Corporation and the Hagadone Corporation both have an interest in making sure people they can control with a firm hand remain in key elected offices in Kootenai County and Coeur d’Alene. There are some others as well. All have extensive financial interests in Kootenai County. That’s why they were collectively very concerned when Steve Adams, Dan Gookin, and Cliff Hayes were elected. It’s also why they worked so hard to ensure that Jim Brannon was (supposedly) defeated in 2009 and that his apparent defeat has not yet been overturned by the Idaho Supreme Court. All of them were thrilled with Barry McHugh becoming prosecutor. McHugh and the present US Attorney for the District of Idaho (Wendy Jo Olson) appear more concerned about being favorably perceived as civil rights defenders than enforcing public corruption laws.

The proposed parking garage in the McEuen Park Master Plan is the offspring of River Park Square parking garage in Spokane. You may remember the Cowles clan has a interest in that. That’s why The Spokesman-Review’s editor and publisher tried, successfully it turns out, to stifle news about the River Park Square scandal and coverup. The Spokesman-Review’s failure to report in that case showed just how important honest news reporting is to a community. The Coeur d’Alene Press editor and publisher learned from that and controlled the news about the Brannon election contest lawsuit as well, because they didn’t want the public to get even a whiff of the stench emanating from the office of their boy, Dan English – County Clerk. The public got enough to give English the long overdue boot, so now the effort by Cowles, the Hagadrones, and others is to try and discredit Cliff Hayes. It’s much easier to get the “right” people in office if you have the “right” person as county clerk with oversight on elections. It also helps tremendously to have a toady as the Secretary of State who will do what the monied influential people tell him to do. Cliff Hayes will not likely run for re-election, and all interested parties want to make sure when Hayes leaves, he is not succeeded by someone equally honest and competent.

Here’s another little connection. The Cowles publishing interests in Idaho are represented by the law firm of Witherspoon, Kelley. If you look at the list of their attorneys in CdA, you’ll see two names you might recognize: Dennis Davis and Joel Hazel. Davis is, of course, the Chairman of the LCDC, and Joel Hazel is from now through 2017 one of the attorney members of the Idaho Judicial Council. Follow the link to the IJC and read the paragraph above the names to see just how much influence the IJC has.

And if you look at the Media/Courts Committee membership list, you’ll see the name of Betsy Russell. She is the Spokesman-Review’s reporter in Boise, but because of that committee membership, I jokingly refer to her as the Spokesman-Review’s lobbyist/reporter in Boise. She and former Deputy Attorney General von Tagen were instrumental in “improving” the Idaho Open Meeting Law to make it unenforceable and therefore meaningless. The interesting thing about her participation in that particular revision was that it made it impossible for her to ethically report on the ongoing revisions. Hence, to the extent anyone relies on her reporting for information like that, her reporting on that was absent.

To some extent, if you can control the information the citizens receive, you can control their behaviors when it comes to selecting public officials. Both Cowles and the Hagadrones have significant control over the flow of information the public receives in north Idaho.

  5. Bill,

The Media/Courts committee is meeting June 25th. Of course the calendar never tells you when or where and it scrolls off so it is difficult to look up previous meetings IF a person is interested in the minutes.

I was – and contacted the AG’s office and they could not find them. In order to get those minutes, I had to contact Betsy Russel. She did send me quite the pile of information and there was a lot in those records concerning the Supreme Court Justice race where Burdick ran against Bradbury and won. She is also on Rule 32 committee – she says that has to do with electronic media, but Rule 32 is referred to by judges and is about more than electronic records. Also, I informed Patrick with the Press some time ago that he was on their list of members and he did not know squat about it – I also told him he should show up at the media/courts committee meeting – but he has probably forgot. We, as citizens are also allowed to attend those meetings IF we know where and when they are held.

  7. It is ugly, ugly, ugly on the HOL site. The sharks are circling and trying to find any blood to force the recall to fail. How’s that for democrasy in action?!
I’m curious if they have the petitions posted on line because many posters seem to have information on who has signed.
DFO is his usual jackass self but even dan english and deanna goodlander are posting their vitriole along with the other HOLers.
Interesting, but not for the faint of heart.

  9. Chouli,

I was over there too and the hate is so thick you can cut it with a knife! Dave Oliveria thrives on hate and keeps it fueled. Deanna Goodlander singling out Dan Gookin’s son, real classy.

  10. Yes, it’s ugly. But, I did find something out by reading. My signature address is not correct with the SOS site, nor is my husband’s and it’s probably messed up with 911. I hope I don’t have a heart attack anytime soon. I am so sick of Goonville. I am now sure I am not getting ALL of my mail.

Why did I think this was going to happen? Well, my first clue was my driver’s license renewal and getting the right address because ‘they’ did not have it in the state data base. I guess it was not their problem – it’s mine.

I am so ticked off – this reminds me of the two birthdays I have with the State of Idaho, because they cannot prove what day I was actually born. I checked with Vital Statistics in Boise and they said it was my problem.

People forget – Deanna Goodlander barely won by – was it 28 whole votes and a few from Canada? Yep, CDA just loves them all.

    Unbelievable.

  11. Chouli,

The petitions are online. I have to go through them now to find my signature.

    Comment by Stebbijo — June 12, 2012 @ 6:57 pm

  12. Stebbijo,

Whenever you change your address, you need to formally change it with the County Clerk (Elections Office), DMV, and any other state agency (e.g., for professional licenses, taxes, etc.). Even if someone else told you it would be done automatically, you need to always check to make sure the required address changes are completed.

    Comment by Bill — June 12, 2012 @ 7:06 pm

  13. On second thought, I am going to do anything. It’s not my problem that the government cannot get it right – the way I look at it, it they throw mine out – they have to throw eveyone’s out because the government screwed it up, not me. The signers? Well, we are just the innocent victims.

    Comment by Stebbijo — June 12, 2012 @ 7:06 pm

  14. Bill,

The city changed it – it was for a 911 thing. We were not notified any differently. I had no choice. It was required and we were force to put number blocks on our homes. We did not do that. The government changed it – I did not. It’s their problem.

    I did not move.

However, someone did change it at the government level and they got it wrong – so it’s probably wrong everywhere else because they are IDIOTS.

    Comment by Stebbijo — June 12, 2012 @ 7:15 pm

  15. In fact Bill, someone did change our address and did not bother to notify us that it was changed. How nice of them.

    Comment by Stebbijo — June 12, 2012 @ 7:20 pm

  16. Stebbijo,

Yes, when the addresses changed for GIS consistency, it was the county’s responsibility to automatically make the changes. That is also true if the City annexes property into the City; the City is responsible for notifying the County of the annexation so that voter registrations are automatically changed. But if officials don’t do their jobs (a common occurrence in this area), you pay the price. My advice is to contact the Elections Office (if voting is important to you) and make sure it has your current and correct address. Same for all other agencies who need your current address. Your taking the initiative rather than relying on the “G” may help avoid the otherwise inevitable bureaucratic BS and runaround that you will have to endure.

    Comment by Bill — June 12, 2012 @ 7:27 pm

  17. Bill:

How does the government have the power to change voter information? In reality, signatures can be thrown out because of the government’s error. The government needs to send the notification – but, they did not bother to do that.

In this case, I just happened to check and look just to see – but this is not common knowledge and many folks might not realize what has happened to their own vote. If I had not read about the possibility and the eyes all over the signatures, I would not even question the process.

At this rate, it was probably just one of those ignorant mistakes – just how many of them are there? Probably at the hands of poor temps dying for a job who have been given a week or two stint at running our government and doing the ugly data entry?

Last time I checked, I was not living in Iran, nor at the address the State of Idaho gave me.

  18. I thought I’d share my post from the HOL site. I know better than to comment there, but they are singling out people who signed along with their standard helping of ridicule. And then John Austin took it over the top…

    my 2 cents on HOL:
Is this the Spanish inquisition? Why would anyone want to point out that the city engineer’s wife signed or school teachers…unless your intentions are to single these people out for nefarious reasons? Don’t they have the right to sign or not sign without fear of persecution? Wow.

North Idaho liberal: “I’m more interested in the fact that the Chief engineer’s wife signed! (City Engineer)” “There’s some teachers, too!”
“These individuals are not your everyday Mary Souza, Kathy Sims groupies.”

Excuse me?? Plz explain what that is supposed to mean.

But John Austin wins the no class award by belittling someone who has recently passed on for signing the petition.
John A: (regarding death of Marv Lekstrum) “RIP Marv, even if you were a little misguided at the end.”

I am in such shock at what John Austin said about Marv Lekstrum that I cannot even find the words to comment on it!!!

  21. Stebbijo,

Several years ago when the County changed some addresses to ensure no address would be duplicated, I received a letter. I was living in CA at the time, so it only covered the place I own on the lake. I’m pretty sure, though, there was a grace period to allow people to make the necessary notifications of address changes. Since I wasn’t living in Idaho then, it wouldn’t have been as complicated as for the people living here. As I recall, the County 9-1-1 center kept both the old and new addresses on file for a time since some people refused to adjust to the changes and remark their residences with their new addresses.

  22. Fiftysmtg and chouli,

Mr. Austin does not appear to have been raised with any class. His regular threats of violence, his bullying tactics online and his overall bombastic tone are very much out of the lowest run of the socioeconomic culture. That also may explain his want/need to be “accepted” by those with money and power. He is to be pitied more than anything, at least in my opinion. Just my opinion of course.

  23. Hot of the press where John Austin admits that LCDC causes the taxing districts to lose revenue.

    JohnA on June 12 at 7:16 p.m.
“I felt really sad when I saw Marv Lekstrum died. Until I saw that he signed Mike’s recall petition. Now I just feel sad. The only thing I can figure out is that Lakes Highway District, on which he was an elected official, loses money each year LCDC is in existence.”

John’s lack of character is highlighted in his comment about Mr. Lekstrum. Shameful, shameful, shameful!!!!!!

    Comment by LTR — June 13, 2012 @ 8:53 am

  24. Okay, John Austin style, …”Lakes Highway District…loses money each year LCDC is in existence.” Hasn’t Austin said a thousand times that urban renewal is tax neutral?

    Comment by Gary Ingram — June 13, 2012 @ 9:38 am

  25. How many times have you heard John A, will be returning in a week or two and everybody who has a issue with UR and the LCDC will be debunked once and for all, proven wrong beyond a shadow of a doubt, ta da ta da, then nothing. On another site he did this again, then of course nothing. Now supposedly a column piece is going to do that so everyone take notice it all ends soon and surely enough will come to light to dispel even the Recall all from what John Austin has to say. WOW

Now he talks ill of the dead and really never has had any basic couth with anything he has brought. He has never debunked anything at all rather entrenched himself in the lost unbelievable spin I have ever seen.

Bill, we need to talk I have recently connected the dots that will shock you concerning Mr. Hayes aside from his elections duties and even Witherspoon Kelly. Those who are connected here amazes how far they will go.

  26. We can focus on the lack of scruples all day long where John Austin is concerned and I’m alright with that but I have to run out for some appointments so instead of going down that road some more if anyone can help me figure out where and what I can personally do for the Lekstrum family I would appreciate that.

  27. Appalled,

I’ll try to get the information you asked for in comment 26 and get it to you. Marv’s memorial service is Thursday, June 14 at 9 a.m. at the Church of the Nazarene in Coeur d’Alene.

    Comment by Bill — June 13, 2012 @ 11:34 am

  28. Something about Marv: When ITD and KMPO were considering closing some of the Highway 95 access points north of Appleway, Marv went to each business on the highway to discuss the issue. His concern was for the businesses as well as for the traveling public. He was truly a dedicated Commissioner.
