Open Session Summer Weekend

Filed under: Open Session — mary @ 3:53 pm

My sweet husband Rick, in the red shirt, turned 60 last week and had a very fun time at his own party!  What have you been up to this summer?

(thanks, Bill, for the great photo!)

  1. Mary,

    You’re welcome.

We know Rick’s versatile on the electric uke and bongos, but how about putting up a little information about the band? They were very very good, very entertaining.

  2. Sure, Gene (in the hat) and Doug are two members of the band “Nobody Famous”. Rick plays his congas and bongos with that band a few times a year, so they’re friends. These guys came to jam and celebrate at the party. Lots of fun!

  3. Ok, so here’s a little personal story about the congas. When I met Rick about 36 years ago, he played the bongos just for fun. He was very good. Many years, babies and a business later, I got him a new set of congas and bongos for Christmas…maybe 8 years ago. Then we had a trade show that we hired Nobody Famous to play for and Rick told the band that his wife had just given him some drums, so could he set them up on the end of the stage and play a little with them during the show? I’m sure they rolled their eyes but they had to let him because he was paying the tab, however they kept all the microphones well away from him. During the show, Rick played a bit then worked the show, then played…anyway by the end of the day, they had mics set up for him and asked him to play with the band for regular performances when he could. He is a natural. It’s good mental therapy and he’s always exhausted but smiling when he’s done.

  4. John Austin:

I know you’re still out there.

I have a City budget question for you.

Both you and I know that the City is limited on the amount it can raise property taxes every year. That limit is 3%, unless the city decides to take Foregone Taxes, in which case it can be higher.

Even so, if you examine the City budget over the past 10 years (as I have), you see that the increase in the amount collected for property taxes (that single line item in the budget) has gone up an average of 7 percent.

    Year Property Tax % increase
    2003 $8,144,967.00
    2004 $8,627,721.00 6%
    2005 $9,425,975.00 9%
    2006 $10,547,115.00 12%
    2007 $11,323,814.00 7%
    2008 $13,061,805.00 15%
    2009 $13,714,806.00 5%
    2010 $14,011,020.00 2%
    2011 $15,188,309.00 8%
    2012 $15,555,673.00 2%
    2013 $16,309,885.00 5%

How can the increase be explained, given the 3% cap? I know that the City did take foregone a few years back, maybe in 2008. I assume new growth can also be factored in. Does the increase above 3% account for the new growth?

    Thanks!
