March 15-22, 2008, is Sunshine Week. This is a national week of education about how We, the People, have a responsibility to ensure that our government officials conduct the public’s business in public, not behind closed doors in executive session. It’s a reminder that state open meeting laws, open records laws, and ethics in government laws will be enforced only if we push for them to be.
Will Rogers referred to our elected officials as “the hired help.” So true. The “hired help” is not the government – we are. Honest, open government is our responsibility.
