Quit Your Whining, Mike

Boise Police Chief Mike Masterson had his sensitive feelings hurt after he signed up to testify at the Idaho Senate State Affairs Committee hearing on S1254 in Boise on Tuesday.  The time allotted for the hearing expired before Masterson could read his statement.  Here is what Masterson wrote in the Idaho Statesman.  It includes the prepared statement he wanted to read into the record.

Here’s a thought, Mike:  Follow your own advice.  “I urge citizens from all over Idaho who have an interest in this issue to contact their Idaho senators and representatives to share your opinion on this issue.”  Mail it in to your Senator and Representative just like the rest of us do.    Your whining indicating your expectation of “special” consideration qualifies you for full-fledged membership the 3-B Club:  Buffoons Behind the Badge.

Masterson questions whether the additional training required for the Idaho enhanced concealed weapons permit is sufficient preparation.  Not surprisingly, Masterson holds up the initial and continuing training that law enforcement officers get in contrast.  Most reasonable people would probably agree that more frequent decision-making, safety, and proficiency training would be beneficial, but being a fully trained and certified law enforcement officer offers no special assurance.

Readers may recall that in January 2013, fired Los Angeles Police Department officer Chris Dorner stalked and killed the daughter of an LAPD Captain, and he also killed two other law enforcement officers before killing himself near Big Bear in a cabin surrounded by law enforcement .

Because Dorner had threatened to kill certain other police officials, the LAPD assigned police officer protective details to those officials. Dorner was a large black male and was known to be driving a gray Nissan Titan with oversized tires and a ski rack.  One of the threatened officials lived in Torrance, CA.   What the police official’s protective detail of trained and experienced police officers did was summarized succinctly in this Los Angeles Times editorial.  This LA Times video provides some additional perspective.

Coeur d’Alene Police Sergeant Christie Wood is also a trainee candidate for the 3-B Club.  In Maureen Dolan’s article headlined Packing for School in this morning’s Coeur d’Alene Press, Wood was quoted, “We’re just as disappointed that our expert opinions are not given any kind of due consideration.  We’re very disappointed in the process and certainly hope that there is some reconsideration of testimony from law enforcement.”

Mail it in, Christie.  Mail it in — just like the rest of us do.

  1. NRA for guns gets 40 minutes, Police Chiefs against guns get 0 minutes, the big whiners.

  2. Mike Teague,

You’re wrong. The NRA was given 20 minutes to make its presentation; the legislators took an additional 20 minutes for Q&A.

My understanding is that there were several people who were not given the time to testify. All can submit their comments in writing just like us common folk. If their comments and arguments have merit, I’m sure they will receive the same or maybe even more thoughtful consideration than if the chiefs had testified verbally.
