Government Nonsense is Universal

Filed under: General — Dan Gookin @ 9:28 pm

One good example of open government locally is the Lakes Highway District. When two new commissioners were elected laster, year, the first thing they did was move the meeting time from the godawful 3:00 PM to the evening, when more people could attend. But apparently scheduling government meetings at odd hours is not a trick unique to the obfuscation crowd in North Idaho.

According to an article in the Orangeburg County (South Carolina) Times Democrat:

Noting that it “suits most working people better,” Calhoun County Council decided two years ago to move its regular meeting schedule 90 minutes ahead — from 7 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

A single citizen has decided that he had enough. Louis B. Rivers is quoted as saying that the change is needed “so the citizens can have input in how their tax money is being spent.” He’s circulating a petition to have the meeting time changed.

An apologist for the time change, County Administrator Lee Prickett, had this to say:

“It’s certainly better for the staff to continue work through the day than to go home and come back at night,” he said.

Score: Staff 1, Taxpayers 0.

But don’t be disappointed. You can change things. All it takes it one person to change the world. That’s how the world has changed. Always.
