Hope for Taxpayers

“Lower taxes, better service, more funding and little or no change to existing employees would be anticipated with the merger, Keck said.”  This statement is by Eric Keck, the City Administrator of Post Falls, in a Press article this morning. http://www.cdapress.com/articles/2009/05/26/news/news04.txt

Mr. Keck was discussing the possible membership of the Post Falls Library in the Kootenai-Shoshone library system, and stated they are looking closely at the possibility because it seems to be a win-win for all concerned.  But don’t worry, there will be public hearings to get input from the citizens, and a vote of the people, the article stated, before the decision is made.

The beautiful CdA Library, pictured above, continues to take more and more of the now diminishing city budget; staff expansions are continually proposed.  Perhaps our city should consider joining the library system too.  What say you?

  1. I’m not sure why the KSAL system would want the CdA financial albatross. What would it add to the KSAL system?

  2. I’ll bet KSAL has already quietly considered and rejected the idea of even offering. The proud and beautiful CDA library building is a CDA stand alone downtown feature not to be consolidated and thus lose its identity. Besides, I don’t think KASL would want to continue to pay the astronomical salaries, CDA pays its staff of librarians.

Mary,I thought the CDA Library already had joined the Cooperative Information Network Library system.
Before they were separate with different cards but, right before the CDA library moved, they said the ‘green’network card was all that was needed to check-out a book. They
    promptly,confiscated my CDA library card.

  4. kageman,

The Cooperative Information Network is a circulation system shared by twenty-some libraries. KSAL and CdA public library are members, but so are some libraries not otherwise administratively affiliated with either. KSAL administers the operation of KSAL’s own branches. CdA public library has its own administration, as does Post Falls. If Post Falls joins KSAL, I believe it will become a branch of KSAL (like Hayden, Pinehurst, Athol, etc.) under the adminstration of KSAL.

  5. I’m just appalled that Post Falls would consider any move that benefits the taxpayers. Don’t they have stakeholders in Post Falls?

  6. I just added an important element to the original post: The Press article quotes Mr. Keck as stating that, if the public hearings show the citizens are in favor of the change, it will go on the ballot this next November for a vote of the people. What a novel idea! Those of us living in CdA haven’t been asked to vote on city issues for so long we’ve almost forgotten it’s our right.

  7. Mike Mc Dowell, in a story in today’s Press, advises the public to pay attention to budget hearings. I believe that recent admissions by the city indicate that expected revenues will be decreased by 40%. Although the public may attend budget workshops, the city prohibits public participation.

  8. Not only that, Susie, when you do bother showing up at the point where public comment is “welcome,” they admonish you for not speaking up earlier. Two sets of rules.

  9. Questionable social skills and two sets of rules methinks.
