Open Session, Monday

Filed under: General — mary @ 7:57 am

180px-dsb-1 Ironman is done and the barricades should be down now, another successful competition complete.   The weather seemed the worst in years.  Did you go?    Any other comments, ideas, suggestions for the week ahead?

  1. Nope, I didn’t go, but I hope those who participated and watched from the sidelines had a good time and got home safely.

  2. Recent comments on the City Council meeting to consider annexation and zone change for NIC’s so called “Education Corridor” have somehow given Councilman Kennedy a free ride. His badgering of Dan Gookin was equally offensive as was the ignorance displayed by the other council people. Mr. Gookin made well reasoned recommendations for their consideration. Mr. Kennedy, on the other hand, used the opportunity to attempt to bully Gookin, which focused on creating a “gotcha event” rather than showing respect for citizen testimony and asking questions about Gookin’s proposals. Stand in presiding officer Edinger should have called Kennedy to order instead of acquiescing to his obnoxious behavior.

He did the same to the president of the Fort Grounds Homeowners, sneering that his testimony was of no value.

Kennedy is a rude know it all with no manners, who is never wrong. Have you noticed that from previous meetings?

  3. I didn’t watch Ironman, however agree with the womans winner. To me, it is not the pros who are exciting, it is the amature who perseveres and finishes no matter what. The Press got it right when they cheered the last person in (under the clock). And how wonderful that there were still people out at midnight in the rain to cheer them on.

  4. For better or worse, I was out of town. In a recent Press editorial comment, I stated:

As I recall, the original timeframe for Ironman to be hosted here was five years, and then somewhere in there a three year extension was acquired. Is next year the last year, or was there some other extension obtained?

Someone with the handle “uncle fester” replied, “This thing is here forever.” Is that true? I was quite certain that the engagements were always limited (except of course for the championship in Kona).

Oh yeah, this is my first post, though I expect to be back here with some frequency. For anyone keeping track or wondering, I’m the same person with this handle on cdapress.com.

  5. eq,

Last year the City signed a five-year contract renewal with corporate Ironman. Two or three days before the contract was approved by Council, corporate Ironman agreed to Mayor Bloem’s request to give $50,000 ($10K/year for five years) to the Kroc Center. Yesterday’s Press had an article which with the paper’s typical imprecision implied that the $10K Ironman gave this year was “new” money. More likely it was the installment payment against the $50K pledge.

  6. So that means until 2015, at least. Interesting.

  7. eq,

From my April 3, 2008, post titled Toilet Not Included – Part 3:

It seems oddly coincidental that within one week of the City’s successfully rushing through approval and funding for the precast concrete structure in the park, the City’s General Services Committee recommended City Council approval of the five year contract renewal with Ironman. At the April 1, 2008, City Council meeting, the Council voted to approve the five-year contract renewal. That raises an obvious, if disquieting, question: During contract negotiations, did the City pledge increased police presence near Ironman Athlete Village in return for Ironman’s donation to the Kroc Center? It’s a fair question given the City’s rush to get this project funded and approved and built by June 15, 2008, for the Ironman Triathlon on June 22, 2008.
