Our Inalienable Rights

Please pray for our country today.  Please ask God to inspire and motivate the citizens of our nation to demand protection of our basic rights; to awaken the apathetic and create in them an awareness of the tenuous condition of our precious constitution.

I was sitting with my brother yesterday.  He is an intelligent, hard working person who, when I spoke about the Cap and Trade bill just passed by the US House of Representatives, asked “What’s Cap and Trade?”

God help us.

There is an excellent column in this morning’s CdA Press by local resident William Green.  I don’t know Mr. Green but he put words to my thoughts today.  He describes the Founding Fathers and their fight for independence: “This new government would understand its role not as a giver of rights but only as the protector and guarantor of rights already given by the Creator and in that sense intrinsic and inalienable.”

He writes of the Constitution, “It outlines the ideas for a government that would derive its powers only from the consent of the governed and not from the arrogant assumption that only government is possessed of all wisdom.”

Guest columns in the Press are not typically carried online, so try to get a newspaper and read Mr. Green’s full column, it is well worth the effort.

Happy 4th of July — hope you enjoy the wonderful weather and our great community.  God bless America.

  1. Mary, Bill Green is the son of Irene and Mel Green. Mel passed on a few years ago and Irene left us last year in her mid-nineties.. For many years she always had a letter to the editor on Constitution Day, Flag Day, Verterans Day, Memorial Day and the 4th of July. Bill is now continuing the tradition. I first met Irene back in the mid 70’s at a FEE (Foundation for Economic Education) seminar at Priest Lake. She was a teacher in Spokane and a true patriot.

  2. Thanks, Gary, for the update. It sounds like Bill Green is in the same mind frame as his Mom, and I’m glad to hear it. His column today was well done. Did you notice his description of why the colonists took up arms against the British?: “…a long list of grievances against the king and his government who had been systematically and in multiple ways eroding almost every aspect of dignity, creativity and freedom to which the Colonies would aspire.”

Does that sound familiar in today’s world?

  3. It was great to see the positive reaction to the “Tea Party” from the crowds at the CdA 4th of July Parade.
Grandparents, parents and their children cheered for liberty and the Constitution.
Acknowledging “Thank yous” were heard among the crowds.
    “Hope springs eternal.”

  4. I’m so glad! — We were away yesterday at a family gathering, so were unable to go to the parade. It’s great that people realized the value and importance of those standing up for the Constitution. Did people join in as you were walking along?

  5. Mary, I don’t like the way Word Press compresses sentences with no space between. I almost read your post #4 as, “I’m so glad we were away yesterday at a family gathering….” I said, “What?” and reread correctly.

  6. I agree with you Gary…Sometimes I even leave more spaces between comments but it still shoves them together.—Punctuation seems to be the only way to create some separation.

But thanks for the heads up, I just fixed my previous comment!
