  3. I was just standing at the corner of Hwy 95 and Ironwood during lunchtime, with Susie Snedaker and her dog, “Graft & Corruption”. We had a great time waving signs for all three council challengers, and a couple of signs saying, “Vote Today!” as well.

Many drivers, waved back, honked and smiled. We got lots of “thumbs ups”.

Why do we take the time to stand on street corners? Because we believe in our rights of free speech, free association and government by and for the people. If WE THE PEOPLE don’t use our votes, what future does our country have? So exercising our right to vote starts here, in our own community. That’s why we stand on street corners, waving signs: To remind people to VOTE!

The challengers are running a grassroots campaign. We don’t have the big money of the overly-connected and obligated incumbents. They can hire students to stick their pamphlets under door mats all over town. They can pay for automatic robo-calls to every voter. They can hire fancy firms to run popularity polls showing which candidates are ahead. And they can have slick advertisements, full of untruths, mailed to every voter, over and over again.

We’ll just do it the old-fashioned way: Talking to our neighbors and friends. Walking door to door, knocking, giving info and answering questions. Calling each voter, individually, to remind them to vote. And standing on street corners with other volunteers, embracing our right to promote the candidates of our choice. Money can’t buy that kind of dedication; it’s the real thing.

So here’s a toast to all the challengers before the polls close at 8pm tonight: Here’s to your courage–you stood up to offer your name as a candidate, even when so many others in town were too afraid. Here’s to your tenacity–you have weathered terrible insults, outright lies and character assassinations, but have kept your dignity, your focus and your resolve. And here’s to your futures–may you know how right you were to take on this task, win or lose, because you represent the voice of so many citizens. Your actions have made a positive impact; you have already made a big difference. Our thanks to you all !
