Kennedy brings Guinness?

Filed under: General — mary @ 3:19 pm

Apparently, CdA City Councilman Mike Kennedy was on the KVNI morning radio show yesterday.  He was there in an official capacity as a city councilman.  During his on-air conversation with the radio guys, Chris & Norm, MikeK announced he brought them a “Six Pack of Guinness”.  (Beer of course.)  He even said he “might have to come back and share some of it with you later”.

Well, apparently it is ILLEGAL to have any alcohol at a radio station, by FCC rules.  And word on the street is that Chris & Norm are now gone.  They were not on the radio today.  Replacements coming next week.

Do we have helpful elected officials in the City of Excellence?

  1. Well Mary – I guess the city tries to be helpful. They offer to bake cupcakes and propose “beer summits” as rewards and peace offerings.

  2. Yes, Stebbijo, you picked up on my sarcasm. It’s hard to take the city officials seriously. All they do is pat each other on the back and kid around at their meetings; everything is great, according to Mayor Bloem’s State of the City address, so why would anyone question them? It’s strange the way the Mayor overlooks the bad behavior of city council members at their meetings, where they are rude to the public, get up and walk out of the room to get coffee in the middle of public testimony, and / or directly insult concerned citizens. Now she has to ignore the major fax pas by Councilman Kennedy that has resulted in two radio personalities getting fired. This is not the kind of “help” our city needs!

  3. Glenn Beck talked today about how to fight the liberal, socilist, and business elite agenda.
It was to start by making your own family independent and secure as possible AND
to begin cleaning up local governments…towns, cities, counties, school boards, etc.

Then to focus on our state. Make the rascals fear us.
We can start by throwing out of state office those who continue to cater to pro illegal immigration forces.

All of you reformist movers and shakers please keep at it.

  4. Mary come on, it’s raving posts like this tha keep people from taking this site sreiously. The change at KVNI was in the works. Granted the drones at the city sure pat themselves on the back sometimes rightfully so but equally for the wrong reasons. But I have to say, or ask, is the behavior at council meetings that bad or are you beating a dead horse for the one or two times that they were rude of went for a pee, smoke, coffee or whatever.
Als there is a big difference between a concerned citizen and a pain in the butt.
Citzen, if you think that Jack Mormon Beck truly has the best interest of this country in mind you better get your gray suit and high black boots now before they sell out.
All that being said, I’m certain to be labeled whatever, but one thing is certain, I’m not a fan of our current council and what seems to be some fishy smelling dealings and trophy polishing but this too shall pass.

  5. Hey Eric, how do you know that the change at the radio station was in the works? The radio guys didn’t say anything on Tuesday, and then, suddenly, Wednesday they’re gone? But beyond any of that, whether planned or unplanned, it is totally unprofessional for an elected councilperson to bring booze/beer or controlled substances of ANY kind to an official meeting.

  6. And your insults against Glen Beck are purely personal attacks. Care to tell us what issues or information Mr. Beck has offered that you disagree with?

    Comment by mary — January 8, 2010 @ 9:51 am

  7. Mary that’s my point. How do I know the change was in the works? I don’t, no more that you know through your implication that whatever happened with the beer incident was the cause of letting them go either.
Are you serious about detecting simply by them being there on one day then gone the next that this is something new, especially in the radio world. It heppens that way in the radio bizz. Ultimately we don’t know what technique was used but we can playfully speculate. FCC says it’s illegal to have any alcohol at a radio station, is that illegal to drink it while on the air, or on site, or is it illegal to even have it unopened in the building.
The point is unplanned fireings happen everyday, look at the NIC thing, the poor soul never saw that one coming. Look at the history of KVNI fireings they all or most came in the dark of the night.
Your everything hatred of Kennedy knows no bounds and blinds your expressed words from time to time. Again I’ll be labeled but again I’ll point out I’m not the biggest fan of some of our Council people. Not to the point of blind hatred because that’s a waste of time, but to the point of dialog.
Perhaps you and Mike should have a guiness together. Listen you have some valid points honestly you do but the animosity is so high it makes you look irrational and that makes valid, truly valid concerns disapear and that fact hurts the public interest more than the powers that be.

  8. Eric, two things:

First, you have no idea what sources I have on the whole KVNI firing. Let me just say I do have info and am not just guessing, like you are.

Secondly, I do NOT hate Mike Kennedy. And I have no regrets about losing to him in the ’05 council elections. I learned more about myself and this community through that challenging process than I ever could have imagined; it was good for me. That said, I don’t respect the job Mike has done on the council. His decisions, methods and attitude toward the public do not serve this community well, in my opinion. I believe Mike is too focused on his future in higher level politics to do the best job for CdA.

You should also note that I have never personally attacked Mr. Kennedy, but have pointed out problems with his behavior in his public office.

And I did sit down with Mike, after the ’05 election, and had a chat over coffee.

  9. I’m outraged that he offered to buy Guinness, of all things. It’s like drinking beer syrup, but beyond that… it’s made outside of the country! If Mike K was a true American patriot, he would have offered to buy them Budweiser. Appalling.

  10. Also, Eric, don’t forget to let us know what information from Glen Beck bothers you…

    Comment by mary — January 8, 2010 @ 12:11 pm

  11. Mary, I only responded to what you gave and your opening post melerly eluded to the idea that the beer got them fired. Had you mentioned that you have credible sources then I certainly would have sat and watched the adventure begin. If all pans out as to your info then bummer for those two and it would be someone’s fault.
I have always honestly believed that you held no grudge for the 05 running, quite gfrankly without Yake running who knows what might have happened.
Again as you state and I’m not to the point of not respecting the job Mike has done on the council but I am starting to wonder more and that’s why I come by here but sometimes, it’s down right out there. And the farther out it goes the easier to overlook the real rational stuff that does hold merit.
OK pointing out problems with his behavior,? His personal behavior? but nothing personal. Saddly I expect the HBO minions will dig up just the opposite.

As far as the Beckster goes there isn’t enough spac or time and especially my time to sit and cover the garbage that that man spits out, for ratings and money that is, sad misinformation that most of the ignorant listeners get mixed up when they try to explain to others. A skinny Rush, at least Beck beat his addiction demons and isn’t afraid to be open about it, I’ll give him that.

    Comment by Eric — January 8, 2010 @ 12:59 pm

  12. Not his personal behavior, his behavior in his official capacity as a council member.

    Comment by mary — January 8, 2010 @ 2:23 pm

  13. I don’t disagree that Kennedy can be boorish at Council Meetings. Seeing him vote while returning to his seat with a cup of coffee was just obnoxious. His behavior toward myself and others during the Mill Site annexation was uncalled for, not to mention underscoring his predisposed bias toward a position before a vote. But that’s Kennedy, and some people actually love him for being that way. Whatever.

During the late 1980s I was a radio show host and appeared as a guest on several radio stations in San Diego. Radio is a weird, weird medium. For example, at one station they had to “cut costs” so they gave morning host a raise from $210,000/year to $230,000/year and fired the gal who answered the phones and made $5.50/hour. I’m sad that Chris and Norm were let go, but I have to doubt it had anything do with Kennedy.

    Comment by Dan — January 9, 2010 @ 9:21 am

  14. “During the late 1980s I was a radio show host”…eh? AND the author of books that have sold in the millions and a major contributor to the acting arts in cda?

We certainly DON’T need any one like THAT on the city council!

    S/

And I think it’s outstanding that Mr. Kennedy can still afford to buy pricey Guinness after spending over $50,000 (in 2 campaigns) campaigning for his $800 (?) per month council job.
BTW, I missed exactly WHAT he was successful at before he started his Ted Kennedy (Swimmer- Mass.) impression.

  15. Thanks Dan, while I’m not intamate with radio dealings I have heard a number of strange things similiar to what you exampled. However in this case it appears Mary has other info. I also agree that Kennedy’s “quirks” can be annoying and quite frankly the “predisposed bias” is what makes me most wary. In turn it makes me wonder how genuine the listening is on a topic that has already been decided internally. Lots of people can pretend to listen.
But, that being said some do like that approach and in some cases I do as well otherwisw things can dragg on and on.
I suppose sometimes you need a “man answer” and sometimes you need, (I’m sure to catch flac on this) a “wife answer.”
This isn’t a shot at men or women but there is indeed and difference between the two answers to the same question 🙂

    Comment by Eric — January 10, 2010 @ 10:46 am

  16. EVERY TIME we have the right to a “CITIZEN ANSWER”, which is when our elected officials sincerely listen to public input and THEN make their decision, balancing the background information with the concerns of the public.

In my 6 years on Planning and Zoning, there were many times when members of the public offered much more completely researched, in-depth, educated information during their testimony than had been given to us before the meeting. I remember often being impressed with the knowledge and expertise of many of our community members.
