LCDC Tell-All Info is HERE

Filed under: General — mary @ 12:44 pm

If you’ve been wanting details about LCDC’s projects and expenditures over the years, we’ve just posted their spread sheet of information.  It’s here on OpenCdA, just click on “Documents & Reports” in the upper right hand corner of this front page, just under the “Register” button.  That will take you to several reports.  The last one on the list is the LCDC project spread sheet from July 2009, and gives loads of details.  Ok, it might not be everything you want to know, but it’s a start. Have fun!

  2. We can all sleep easier knowing that the LCDC has spent $281,111 on public art. Or at least it says the money was spent on public art.

  3. As one who is a visual arts advocate of many years, I must comment on the latest piece of sculpture on Fourth and Foster, the entrance to Midtown. It consists of two large forks and is, I presume, a bike rack. Why was this work located on this corner? Will people really lock their bikes to walk up the street to any of the businesses? Is the area to be a restaurant row? There might be a public safety issue with the ends of the handles as well.

Finally, why must all of the bike racks be located in this area rather than in all of the parks throughout the city? Why not install one at Person Field?

  4. Why would LCDC give $50,000 each year to the Downtown Association for Events?

  5. the LCDC has spent $281,111 on ugly public art

    Fixed that for you.

Perhaps someone with artistic taste or style should be pushed onto the LCDC board? What passes for public art in this town is truly hideous. I know none of the cult members and true believers would admit publicly to how awful the art is, but they gotta be scratching their heads about some of the questionable pieces. Especially when so many cities have beautiful and inspiring public art, it makes me question whether the LCDC is enhancing our lives or just finding out a new way to get money to their friends.

  6. Dan,

The problem with art, particularly original art by local artists, is appraising its value. It is very subjective, and that issue lends itself to kickbacks. An artist can sell a $20K piece of art for $30K, then kick back $5K to whomever s/he wants that approved the price. It’s somewhat like inflating the appraisal on a piece of property.

  7. Or selling jewelry for way much more than it costs. Either way, is it illegal?

  8. LTR, I think that the $50,000 comes from downtown parking revenues.

The Arts Commission does have members who know good art. Perhaps part of the problem lies in the public choice aspect. Another part of the problem might be having the availability of too much money and the push to spend it to prove that this is an arts community ala Santa Fe. The ersatz bike racks flooding Midtown are an example. I could quote Keats on the subject of art, but will spare you as it is too early.
