Open Session, Thursday

Filed under: Open Session — mary @ 1:14 pm

Big national news on the 2nd Amendment today! The US Supreme Court upheld an individual’s right to bear arms. But the surprise was the closeness of the vote: 5 to 4. Scary. Any comments about this or other issues?

  2. Mama Bear said: What brave sacrifice did Obama ever make except to leave his precious racist church…

    Answer:Didn’t Obama leave behind his
    religious and cultural heritage?To
become a christian and patriotic to the cause of being a good american?

I’m NO supporter of any democrat but,
can’t we at least give Obama a little credit?

  3. kageman…Look at the church Obama decided to align himself with. As I remember Rev. Wright said “America be damned. No, I think Obama is a political opportunist in regard to his religion and his patriotism. He left his muslim upbringing to join Rev. Wright’s brand of Christianity which helped him in Chicago. Then he left Wright’s church so he would be more acceptable as a presidential candidate. He criticized people for wearing a flag pin when he ran to the left and now he wears one as he runs to the right. Any man who allows his own children to listen to hate America speech and hate white man speech from the pulpit is not acting with good judgement. Obama may not have been swayed by this propaganda, but children are more easily influenced. With all my misgivings about McCain he is clearly the best choice for America.

  4. Will Penny,while modern technologies
have given us an advantage. It has also, given the criminal element an
advantage. For instance the internet has transformed our lives for the better.Yet,in one minute,I found a website that sells only full automatic weapons including Uzzis.
Whose to say that a criminal won’t go on these websites and purchase these guns, because they have easy access via the internet. When people make private gun purchases, there is no waiting period for criminal background checks.

Dan says;that the Branch Davidians modified some of their guns from semi-to full automatic. With the right permits and licensing in some states and obtaining converter kits to modify your firearm,it may not be illegal to modify your firearm to full auto.in some cases.

  5. Kageman. Would you provide that web site, I’d like to look at it.

It is a federal violation to own or transfer a full auto firearm, regardless whether it was made full auto or has been converted to full auto unless you have the proper federal paper work, regardless what state you live in. Many states don’t allow private possession of full autos at all. It is a violation in every state to convert a semi auto to a full auto. There are several web sites that list firearms for sale, all clearly state that shipment will only be to a current Federal Firearms Licesne (FFL). If they didn’t, ATF would be on them like a dog on a bone.

Using your logic, we’d have to cease all technology because crooks might take advantage of it. Many states, like Idaho, also do not require background checks for private party to private party firearms sales. Doesn’t seem to make us a shooting gallery.

  6. Will Penny,The website I looked at is:www.autoweapons.com and it has a wide array of full automatic firearms
including submachine guns.If you go on the FAQ link,it says that not all states require a Federal C&R License,
albeit most states would require one.
I’m assuming Idaho requires the FFL through the ATF.

Pariah,is right.Owning a full auto firearm can be a rich man’s sport. The cheapest gun I’ve seen on the website so far was $4,000.Also, you have to pay $200 for the transfer tax/registration fee.

I’ve always wondered why people would want to buy these assault rifles/machine guns. But,I will admit
to a morbid curiosity to owning a
‘tommy gun’that was owned by Al Capone.Do you know where you can buy
guns owned by historical figures? And how accurate would the authenticity of the gun be.

  7. Kageman. Thanks for the web site. A C&R Licenses is for Curios & Relics which are not considered firearms any longer by ATF, go figure!! All FFLs are issued by ATF. And yes, if you go in to a gun store in ID they hold an FFL in order to lrgally conduct business. There has always been a civilian interest in the guns used by military & police, if it’s good enough for the GIs and cops they figure it’s good enough for them. Many Vets want to own the gun that they used in the military and since WWII that has been a semi or full auto rifle or pistol. The big push for semi auto handguns for police started in the late 80s, prior to that the overwhelming majority of handguns that were sold were revolvers. Now with about 98+% of law enforcement carrying semi autos, the overwhelming majority of handguns now sold are semi autos as well. Really nothing sinister at all.

Sounds like you found a good place to start looking for a historically significant firearm. I’m sure that little endeavor will set you back a few tanks of gas!!
