Open Session, Weekend

Filed under: General — mary @ 8:54 pm

I love Hoopfest!  What a great weekend of good, clean, down & dirty streetball.  It’s the largest 3 on 3 basketball tournament in the whole world, and it’s right next door in Spokane.  There are  6,500 teams.  4 people per team, plus all their family and fans…it’s massive.  And Coeur d’Alene is always well represented.

The teams from CdA in each age group often go to each others games, cheer each other on and hang out there together.  Lake City High and Coeur d’Alene High, it doesn’t matter, they bond together against the rest of the teams.

Hoopfest is different than any other big sporting event.  You see players of every age group from 9 years old to the “over 60” teams.  There are guy teams, girl teams, mixed teams and family teams.  There are corporate teams and church teams…etc.  Players come in every size, shape, gender, ethnicity, style and from many other states and countries.  It’s a wonderful people-watching experience, and we’ll do it again tomorrow.

Any other comments, ideas, issues?

  1. Back in San Diego, I remember the Over The Line Tournement. It’s three-person baseball. Here are the rules.

The term “over the line” is also a double entendre. The event gets really raunchy, especially the team names. And then there’s Miss Emerson…

But I’m certain that Hoopfest is good clean family fun. 🙂

  2. Our son’s team actually won the team name contest that KREM TV was running yesterday…
their name? Just what 19 & 20 year old boys would think up: Victorious Secrets!

  3. Raging Against Self Defense:
A Psychiatrist Examines The Anti-Gun Mentality

About a year ago I received an e-mail from a member of a local Jewish organization. The author, who chose to remain anonymous, insisted that people have no right to carry firearms because he didn’t want to be murdered if one of his neighbors had a “bad day”. (I don’t know that this person is a “he”, but I’m assuming so for the sake of simplicity.) I responded by asking him why he thought his neighbors wanted to murder him, and, of course, got no response. The truth is that he’s statistically more likely to be murdered by a neighbor who doesn’t legally carry a firearm1 and more likely to be shot accidentally by a law enforcement officer.1

    Great article, worth the read.

  4. Allow me to annoy the gun control crowd by modifying the quote slightly:

He insisted that people have no right to freedom of speech because he didn’t want to be talked about if one of his neighbors had a “bad day”.

  5. Two can play:

He insisted that people have no right to freedom of religion because he didn’t want to be prayed about if one of his neighbors had a “bad day”.

  6. The Hoopfest team, Victorious Secrets, was finally victorious! After 6 very close games yesterday, in 100 degree heat, they won their court title. It took a lot of tenacity, talent and gallons upon gallons of water and Gatorade, but they did it. Photos were taken. They could all barely walk, but two of them had to get ready and go to their jobs for the rest of the evening. Oh, for the energy of youth!
