Here’s a brilliant suggestion from one of our readers: Have LCDC close the River District and return the tax income to the city and county to help offset the cost of the new jail. What do you think?

LCDC and the New Jail?

I think the first step is Sheriff Watson (personally, not one of his surrogates) needs to meet with groups of interested individuals, maybe like Hazel Bauman has done with the post-levy failure forums. Watson needs to explain in terms people can understand why what he wants is essential for the public safety in Kootenai County. So far, he’s done a really poor job of that.

Why not close the Lake District instead? When we have come to the point where we keep mentioning LCDC’s name;you know they are having
too much of an impact on this area.
I’m cynical about URD’s in general.
Seems like URD’s were started by businessmen, for the benefit of Business people.Don’t these people realize we are in a recession?

You bet, Kageman! This year the LCDC’s revenue will be down. Property values are down across the county, which means the increment has gone down for the LCDC’s “improvements.” Surprisingly, the City’s take from those properties does not change because the values are stuck at 1997 and 2001 levels. In fact, the City actually sees a modest increase due to the higher levy rates.
The “D” in LCDC is development. They view themselves as a private development corporation. It should be about infrastructure. It should be about jobs. It’s about development. Period.

Remember, even though their name is Lake City Development Corp., they are a public entity paid by tax dollars. They are NOT a private development company, even though the Chairman owns a private real estate development company with buildings and property in the urban renewal district.

I always thought it suspicious when the ura incorporated and changed the name. It remains a shadow government.

When I first had met a certain board member of the LCDC, I asked, “So, what do you do?” They replied, “I own a development corporation.” This is not one that TRULY owns a development corp. They were in fact talking about the LCDC. This is the problem. These people on the board really think they own the LCDC.
