Open Session, Car d’Alene!

Filed under: Open Session — mary @ 6:57 am

We were down at the car crusin’ parade of gems last evening.  The turnout was great!  Spectators lined Sherman and all along the cruise route.  The cars were terrific and the weather was beautiful.  It felt like the first day of the summer season.  Were you there?

Any comments about this or any other thoughts, ideas or questions?

  1. We went to the lake place and cut brush and reduced ladder fuels. It’s something we do in the spring to reduce the fire fuels around the house. We do it again in the fall, usually after the growing season. Something different this year from years past, though, was the complete absence of yellowjackets. We put traps out in March-April, whenever there has been enough warmth to warm the ground and bring the queens out. Usually by May we’re beginning to see a few yellowjackets in the traps, but none this year. Not one, and we’re already in the third week of June. We’re hoping it’s because of the cooler and wetter spring we’ve had.

On our way to the lake, we drove through Worley and noticed that one of the tribal fireworks stands had apparently burned. It turns out that the stand and its contents went up in a flash of fire and a premature fireworks display due to the carelessness (stupidity) of a bystander. There also appeared to be a couple of cars that went up as well. According to the folks there, no one was hurt.

Last Saturday we went to the dedication of the new Worley Fire District Station 1 on US 95 just north of Setters.

Lots of boats out on the lake down around where we are. Apparently the kokanee are biting at the south end, so there were a lot of fishermen around Chippy Point and Spokane Point and between 16-to-1 Bay and Windy-Sunup Bay. Glad to see KCSD finally paying some attention to that end of the lake, particularly looking for overloaded boats and drunk boaters. Town of Harrison seems to be doing a bit better now that the weather is drawing the boaters and bicyclers out.

  2. Your empty traps are because all the yellowjackets are at my house. I’ve already been stung twice. To add insult to injury, one remained (unknown to me) on my blouse and continued stinging me in the house. I’ll be happy to send them to you if you like. 🙂
