Open Session, Tuesday

Filed under: General — mary @ 2:02 pm

The fourth in the series of School District community meetings was early this morning.  Hazel did a terrific job of listening to the public and answering any and all questions, directly and in detail.

Any comments, questions or ideas?

  2. reagan,
Why don’t you put this energy to use and ask the ones that are skrewing taxpayer for personal gain, as you put it, “any and all questions, directly and in detail”?

  3. Great job again Hazel! I can’t help but wonder where SD271 would be had Hazel Bauman gotten the job of superindent the first time she was considered for it; instead of Harry Amend.

  4. It is my hope, that the county commissioners turn down heartlands request for a zoning change on 300 acres, for the pending Powderhorn Ranch Development.

They want to be zoned rural, instead of agriculture and have 2,000 acres
they want eventually, build 1300 units on including 3 golf courses.

How much more traffic can Hwy.97 take?Granted they will have a water taxi service like Gozzer Ranch,if their development passes the approval process. But,there will still be a significant increase in traffic.

It’s these high-end developments that inflate Real Estate prices for everybody, giving a skewed average for the price of a home.

I predict that the proposed Powderhorn Ranch Development, will be just as contentious as the Chateau de Loire was, maybe even more so.Many will be against it also.

  5. concerned citizen, I will. As soon as Mary answers the simple question that has been put to her and goes straight to the heart of her integrity and honesty.

  6. kageman,

What effect do you think Powderhorn would have on Harrison? Not just economically but socially and politically as well?

I believe that area is served by the East Side Fire District. A development that large would almost need to have its own station and staff. ESFD is volunteer. I don’t know how many additional they would need, but I know Worley Fire District is having some difficulty getting more volunteers.

  8. reagen… I do hope that you appreciate that your nagging inquiries are allowed here. You will also notice that similar comments are allowed in the CdA Press commentary section. But, if you were a critical commenter on Huckleberries Online Oliveria would cut you off. The Spokesman-Review and DFO do not allow or encourage free speech. They simply delete contrary comments and ban the commenter from using the web site.

Here on Open CdA and over at the Press critical questions are welcome. That is no assurance that they will be answered. But, the mere fact that they are allowed and that similar actions are not allowed on HBO is a source of pride for Dan, Mary and it speaks highly of Hagadone. They value the rights of the citizens where a major local newspaper does not. And I hope that you appreciate that.

  9. To Reagan:

Why are you so worried about whether or not someone used a tape recorder?

We all are living in a generation of being video taped where ever we go. Security cameras are everywhere recording our every move indoors and outdoors. Some security cameras can record sound as well. Our homes and cars can be seen on Google maps. Driving habits can be captured at traffic lights and the freeways. Finding where people live can be done easily through the county’s assessor’s office. Many people use tape recorders to record the words of others. This is life.

  10. Bill, what I know is:if Heartland and the transportation Dept.can’t come up with adequate solutions to the transportation problem, then the Powderhorn development will fail the approval process, just like the Chateau de Loire did.

Hwy.97 cannot handle much more traffic than it already has. This development is too big.Everytime,I travel on that HWY.I feel like I’m risking my life.

  11. kageman,

I’m familiar with that area. We used to rent just across the lake on Cleland Bay, and now we have a place on Cave Bay. You’re right about 97 not being able to handle much more traffic. With a safe volume, it requires a driver’s absolute, undivided attention. As the volume of traffic increases, the likelihood is that more drivers paying less attention and driving unsafely will be using it.

There was some talk about researching ferry service so cars could cross the lake rather than be forced to go around the lake.

  12. Bill,I was on another blog site and John Austin was addressing my comments about the pending Powderhorn Ranch development and my concerns about solving the transportation problem among other things. Here is what he posted:

Mr. Mann: “I think the ferry system will be in place before Powderhorn develops so I don’t believe it’s a relevant issue. There may be other issues that need to be addressed, but the impact on Highway 97 is not one of them, in my opinion.
I look forward to more discussion on this issue and appreciate your comments”.

BTW-John Austin is an urban planner,
who works for the Panhandle Area Council.

Also, his comment makes it sound like the Powderhorn development is a done deal.I think this pending development will be more contentious than any before it.I might add, where will they put the landing for the ferry in CDA?Thats the big question.

  13. kageman,

Here’s the link to the Coeur d’Alene Press article about the ferries.

Since we have a place in Cave Bay, the next bay south from 16-to-1 Bay, we’re following this. If you’re looking for something interesting, research how 16-to-1 Bay got its name.
