Know Your Money

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 10:17 am

The Coeur d’Alene Press reports that counterfeit federal reserve notes are popping up here again.

The best way for people to avoid becoming a victim is to Know Your Money.  Gimmick detectors of one kind or another are no substitute for cash handlers knowing the validating characteristics of the currency they are accepting.  The feel of the note and the observation of a cash handler are still the best tools available to reduce the chances of counterfeit currency being successfully passed.  Knowing what to do if you believe someone is trying to pass a counterfeit note is equally important.

  1. There was an issue made over on the Press blogs regarding this article. If I may quote:

Sgt. Christie Wood said if a counterfeit crime spree becomes large enough, it can be turned over to the Secret Service.

Huh? Is there a threshold before the Secret Service becomes involved?

  2. No. However, the level of involvement depends (or at least it used to) on the circumstances of the pass, the particular CFT note passed, whether the passer is in custody, how much information of investigative value is available, etc.

  3. So, basically, the SS would make that decision, not the CDA Police? The way Wood is quoted, it sounds like the local constabulary gets to decide.

  4. To get the best answer about how it is handled in this region, call the USSS in Spokane (509) 353-2532 and ask. Since the USSS is no longer under the Treasury Department, it’s now under Department of Homeland Security, things may have changed.
