Did He Really Say That?

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 8:50 am

The Idaho Statesman ran an Associated Press article headlined Idaho leaders discuss security post-bin Laden.  The article quotes Idaho State Police Major Kevin Hudgens (shown left) as saying, “We’re asking our troopers out on the road to be a little more diligent … keeping their eyes open a little more than they normally would for the next couple of days.”  So, if not fully open, what condition would an on-duty ISP Trooper’s eyes “normally” be in?

  1. Bill, maybe he meant “alert” versus eyes open a little more.

  2. Steve,

    I’m sure he did.

  3. Ok, your correct. I’d just like to hear his explanation of “normally”.

  4. And more importantly what happens after “the next couple of days”? Do the eyes go partially closed again?

  5. From time to time we all say minor absurdities like that. It sounds perfectly reasonable to the speaker, because the speaker knows what he means. But to someone hearing or reading it for the first time and hearing it or reading it literally, we ask, “Did he really say that?” It’s even more noticeable when the general topic is serious and the absurdity is humorous. (He might also have meant “vigilant” rather than “diligent,” since we generally assume the troopers are always diligent.)
