Open Session, Thursday

Are the hot days of summer behind us? Well, as we spend more time inside, local issues are certainly starting to spark. What do you think of the highway district LID review by the County Commissioners? How about the Press editorial this week slamming the Reagan Republicans for getting involved in local “non-partisan” elections? And then there’s the national scene, with two special elections favoring Republicans…were they just a result of candidate  idiosyncrasies or were they a strong  message to the White House?

Your thoughts on these or other issues…

  1. Jeff Ward, President of the Kootenai County Reagan Republicans, responded to this Press editorial in his weekly newsletter. Here’s an excerpt of Jeff’s response:

“The Reagan Republicans is a local group of political activists who wish to see conservative candidates elected and endorse those we feel would well serve our community. We publicize our endorsements, knock on doors and make phone calls. We are not an arm of the national, state or county Republican Party and are answerable only to our local members. We find it funny that our local group is targeted for criticism for advocating Republican candidates for local office but two years ago when out-of-town Democrats big-wigs like former Governor Cecil Andrus, sitting Congressman Walt Minnick and Boise Mayor David Bieter infused partisanship into the Coeur d’Alene City Council race by strongly supporting fellow partisan Democrat Mike Kennedy, we did not hear even a peep from the Press.”

  2. A commenter over on the Press web site made these observations about the editorial pushing for “non-partisan” elections:

… both Kennedy and Bloem hired The Winding Creek Group from Washington, DC, to promote their candidacies. Their 2009 campaign finance reports reflect this. Who is the Winding Creek Group? It’s website “About Us” page leads with this: “We admit it, we’re partisan…we believe in the Democratic Party and Democratic candidates at every level from the Courthouse to the White House.”

Either Publisher Thompson and Editor Patrick are the stupidest people in Idaho (entirely possible) or they’re part of the racketeers that have taken over City government. They own a few district court judges and now the prosecutor, and until the surprising last election, they owned the County Clerk.

  3. Here’s an incredibly disturbing story out of London: 250,000 school children have been labeled “racist” and their names put in a government database of information that could follow them all the way through their school and work lives. Some of the kids are as young as 3 years old! One report includes a child calling another one, “broccoli head”. Wow. George Orwell here we come.

  4. There’s nothing wrong when either political schema grinds or machinates their perspectives. There is something wrong with not knowing about it. And, so, thanks for this website.

And as far as the CdA Press is concerned they do not limit alternative views online and they do print opinions much more fairly than some, ahem, other, papers. Clearly things could be less biased but we do have a clear example of how they ARE much more biased. Things are looking up.

  5. For those keeping track, Jeff Ward of the Reagan Republicans had an excellent response in today’s Press, rebutting the above mentioned editorial. It’s well worth the time to read. but the online version of the Press has it hidden away deep under the letters to the editor. You can click below to find it:

  6. Although I do vote more conservative, I WILL vote for the candidate I believe more suited to the position and NOT because they are republican. I believe our democrats have become a direct response to our republicans and visa versa.

The pendilum swings just as far to the right as it does to the left to the point that NEITHER can see, nor will, the need for spending as well as cutting.
