Open Session, Wednesday

Filed under: Open Session — mary @ 8:40 am

There’s an interesting article about election compacting on the front page of today’s Press. We have so many little elections for highway districts, school districts, hospital districts, local city elections and of course county and state too. They are scattered all over the calendar and the voting places are all over town. It is downright confusing for voters.

What’s probably surprising to many citizens is that most of these elections are not run by the county elections department, they are run by the entity having the election. For example, the upcoming CdA School District Levy for $31.1 million dollars will be run entirely by the School District. They will create the ballots, man the voting places and count the ballots.

Any thoughts, comments or questions on this or any other topic?

You Can Fight City Hall – And Win

Filed under: Observations — Dan Gookin @ 8:42 am

Too many times in Coeur d’Alene, our Mayor and City Council seem to sit on the “other side” of the people. That’s not the way I’d like to see my community, so I joined with local citizens to change how the City is planning to fix our sidewalks.

Today’s Coeur d’Alene Press has an article headlined Sidewalks: No concrete answer.  The article by staff writer Marc Stewart reports that in the face of overwhelming community outrage and opposition to the City’s stand on sidewalk repairs,  the City Council has decided to rethink its position that resulted in intimidating and threatening letters from the City to homeowners.  How does one “rethink” something when it appears there had been little or no original “think”?

Who’s Who: Wendy and Kenny Gabriel

Filed under: General — mary @ 9:55 pm

Wendy Hague Gabriel and Kenny Gabriel are a City of Coeur d’Alene duo. Kenny is our Fire Chief and Wendy is the City Administrator. The two have been married since December 2005. My info says that Wendy was Kenny’s direct supervisor and that posed a problem if they got married. So a new position was created and Jon Ingalls was promoted from Street Department Supervisor to Deputy City Administrator for $100,784./year. Kenny makes $100,247 as Fire Chief and Wendy makes $106,784 as City Administrator.

Here’s Wendy’s job description as taken from the city’s web site:

The functions of the City’s Administrator are to:

  • Facilitate the goals and policies as set by the Mayor and City Council
  • Implement partnerships with community organizations, citizens, and civil groups seeking to improve the quality of life in the City of Coeur d’Alene
  • Work with outside groups or organizations seeking to do business within the greater CdA area
  • Oversee and coordinate efforts of City departments, committees, agencies and commission
  • (the points above are from the city’s web site and constitute the entire job description listed)
  • I’ve been told that Wendy is the political arm of the Mayor because of her connections in Boise.
  • Wendy’s Dad is Bruce Newcomb, former Speaker of the House in Boise who retired in 2006.
  • Wendy’s Step Mom, Celia Gould, is also former legislator and now heads up the state’s Dept of Agriculture.
  • Kenny also sits on the board of the Kroc Community Center

Interesting Website – Real Estate and Mortgage Fraud

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 4:57 pm

I found an interesting website today about real estate and mortgage fraud. It is the Real estate and mortgage fraud information and assistance center.  It notes:

“If you need to learn about:

  • foreclosure “rescue” scams
  • mortgage “elimination”
  • straw buyers
  • investors receiving cash back after closing
  • predatory lending
  • equity skimming or stripping
  • bad appraisals
  • false downpayments
  • down payment assistance programs
  • is it legal to include a car with the house loan (no)
  • property flipping
  • fraud indictments

This is the place to start your research.”

They’re right.  The website is a wealth of information.  It is sponsored by the National Association of Consumer Advocates, mortgagefraudwatchlist.org, and the International Association of Financial Crimes Investigators

Open Session, Monday

Filed under: Open Session — mary @ 10:20 am

Another week, and a little new snow to tease us again. We’ve got the the big CdA school levy for $31.1 million on May 20th and, just to be confusing, the local primaries are one week later on May 27th. Also, the LCDC was at it again last week, paying $25,000 for a person to go into Midtown and gather information about affordable housing.

Any comments, questions or ideas?

Mica Grange: Friday Nite Hot Spot!

Filed under: General — mary @ 2:08 pm

The Grange up on Mica Flats was the place to be last night. On a cold and rainy night, it was a haven of welcoming faces, a roaring fireplace, coffee with homemade cookies and a lively Candidate Forum for the County Commissioner Republican primary. Incumbent Todd Tondee and his challenger Tim Herzog were present, as well as incumbent Rick Currie and challengers Tom Cronin and Jai Nelson. They all comprised the panel up on the quaint, wooden stage. (more…)

Take Heart, There’s Hope

The City’s Pulse Newsletter

By Mary Souza, April 17, 2008

There’s a stark contrast of attitudes among our community leaders. On one hand we see the open, honest admission of fault by officials at the County, and we notice the responsible, citizen-oriented use of tax dollars by Post Falls. On the other hand lurks the arrogant attitude of the CdA City Council, the distortion of facts by the CdA School District and the secretive dealings of NIC. The differences are quite remarkable. Any person on the receiving end of the attitudes is instantly aware of which hand is being offered.  (more…)

Open Session, Friday

This morning’s Press had a shocker…if the proposed school levy is approved, the owner of a $200,000 house will pay a total of $550 per year!

Any comments, questions or ideas on this or any subject?

Are We Becoming More Crooked?

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 10:16 am

“Public corruption is our top criminal priority, for the simple reason that it is different from other crimes. Corruption does not merely strike at the heart of good government. It may strike at the security of our communities.”

That was included in Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Robert Mueller’s statement when he addressed the American Bar Association Litigation Section Annual Conference on April 17, 2008.  I urge readers to follow the link to Director Mueller’s statement.  Please, please read all of it.  I believe Director Mueller could easily have been talking about our community when he said, “We have seen a similar laundry list of politicians who have violated the public trust for their own benefit, from the halls of Congress to the city councils of small-town America.  It would seem that desire for the good life has become what Teddy Roosevelt once termed the ‘get-rich-quick theory of life.’ ”
