Birds of Prey

By Mary Souza, June 12, 2008
It feels like defiant birds are circling, circling, circling.  Their target: The taxpayers of Coeur d’Alene.  And the prey doesn’t stand a chance.

I attended the General Services meeting at the City of Coeur d’Alene this past Monday.  Three city council members listened as City Administrator Wendy Gabriel described the proposed agreement to “lease” the Harbor Center building and land to the University of Idaho for 99 years.  If the college chooses to renew the lease after 99 years, (mark that date on your calendars!) they can extend it out to 198 years.  (more…)

Cop Shop Update

Filed under: Observations — Dan Gookin @ 9:56 am

Remember the urgency? Remember the push? Remember the public meetings and debate? Well, you probably don’t remember the latter, because in a theme that’s all-to-familiar, there wasn’t any! Today School District 271’s Superintendent Hazel Bauman met with folks who wrote letters opposing the recently failed levy. At the meeting, it was suggested that SD271 should hire an outside, independent, certified auditor to check up on the books. How do you feel about that? Vote now!

City Gives OUR Property Away

Filed under: General — mary @ 11:11 am

The Harbor Center building, also known as the old Osprey Restaurant, and the 7.5 acres of riverfront property it sits on will be leased to the University of Idaho for the next 198 years, if the City of CdA approves the measure this month. The price? A mere $1,000. a month. One thousand dollars and some change. Less than most of us pay for our house mortgage.  (more…)

School District Questions Abound

Filed under: General — mary @ 10:04 am

The CdA School District plans serious budget cuts for the upcoming year, a recent Press article states. “The budget cuts have nothing to do with the failure of a $31 million school plant facilities levy at the polls May 20, Bauman said.” (more…)
