I support the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department’s Adopt-a-Hydrant Program. The program encourages citizens to remove snow from around fire hydrants so the Fire Department doesn’t have to waste precious minutes in a fire emergency locating and digging out its hydrant. For this program to work well, shouldn’t the Fire Department know where its own hydrants are? |

What Might Work in North Idaho?
There’s an interesting article titled SW Idaho proposed site for high-tech corridor in today’s Seattle Times. There’s a similar article titled Eagle-Star area targeted for high-tech hub in The Idaho Statesman. If a high-tech corridor might work in southwest Idaho, what could work here in north Idaho? |

Open Session, Final Weekend of 2008
Merry Christmas and happy last days of ’08. Here’s the question at hand: Are you sad to see this year end? Or do you have higher hopes for ’09?
Other comments, questions, ideas?

Addendum
This is an addendum to my December 21, 2008, post. Today on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition, host Renee Montagne interviewed con man turned rabbi Mark Borovitz about Madoff’s scam. Rabbi Borovitz discussed con man Madoff’s mindset. Turn on your computer sound follow the Listen Now link to hear Con Man Turned Rabbi Conned in Ponzi Scheme. |

They Said What?!!
In spite of receiving billions of dollars in bailout money, many major banks have declined to tell taxpayers where their tax money has gone and how it has been spent. With that kind of arrogance, these clowns could easily have been elected to the City Council. |

Lessons from Carlo & Bernie
Bernie Madoff’s effort to capture “the world indoor record for fraud” continues. Losses attributed to Madoff have already hit $50 billion, eclipsing the $1 billion Enron losses. The damage inflicted by Madoff’s ripoff seems to worsen with every news cycle. Still, it’s not too early to learn some lessons from Bernie and his scheme’s namesake, Carlo Ponzi. |

Open Session, Weekend
This is Dan during last winter–doesn’t seem much different now, does it?
In sports, the Zags play in the “Battle in Seattle” today against U Conn, the #2 team in the nation and lots of local folks are braving the drive over for the 1:00 pm game. (we’ll watch on TV)
On the national & world front, yesterday saw interesting news about the donations to the Clinton library. Huge money from Arab countries and connections in Kazakhstan and Ukraine. Also from US companies asking for taxpayer bail-outs: AIG, Lehman, Merrill, Citi Group and General Motors. Can Hillary be independent? Any other thoughts or comments?

Caldwell Gets It
Urban Renewal raises property taxes. It’s a fact. The LCDC doesn’t want to tell you that, but it’s true. The question is whether that increase in property taxes is worth the benefit of the Urban Renewal. Some folks in Caldwell don’t think so.

Body Snatcher Open Session
In the 1978 remake of the classic SciFi thriller, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, regular people have their bodies overtaken by pods from outer space. The pod people look just like the original humans, but they lack passion and purpose. They just exist, going through the motions.
This morning I had some serious Body Snatcher déjà vu when I read CNBI’s full-page property tax ad in the CDA Press today. Apparently the pod people have taken over CBNI. Here’s your open session for a cold pre-winter day.
