Obliged To Be Thrifty

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 8:36 am

Our economy is in either a recession or a depression.  Regardless of which term applies, it appears that some elected officials are willing and even eager to incur massive public debt and liability now in an effort to obligate our way out of the recession/depression.  The idea is hardly new even in Idaho.  Over 90 years ago, a wise Judge Dietrich penned these words of wisdom when referring to the Idaho Constitution, Article 8, Section 3.   (more…)

Site of former McEuen tennis courts 1/29/10

Watch Out for McEuen Field!

They’re gone.  The tennis courts at McEuen Field are completely gone.  Did you know this?  Neither did I.  But I’ve been busy with family and post-holiday activities so when I heard about the tennis courts from an alert reader, my thought was that there must have been some public announcement and I just missed it.

So I went to the city’s web site and checked everywhere, even under “CITY LAUNCHES BLOG TO ENHANCE COMMUNICATION”.  There was no info about the tennis courts.  Then I thought maybe they announced it at a recent city council meeting.  So I checked the last two months worth of meeting minutes, reading all the way through…no info on the tennis courts or McEuen field.  So much for enhanced communication!  Heck, they publicize when they’re going to do slash burning and cleanup on Tubb’s Hill, so people won’t get worried, but they take out the tennis courts without the same concern?  (more…)

Susie S: “There are plans…”

McEuen field baseball

“Of course there are plans for McEuen Field.  Does the city plan to hold yet more meetings on the development plans now that a number of years have passed since the Walker Macy plan adoption by the city?  Best the people keep an eye on the former decrepit tennis court area.  I find it curious that the courts are suddenly demolished as they certainly have been sitting there unused for months and months and months.  They certainly were not an example of the city’s attention to detail for citizens and visitors.”  (posted by Susie Snedaker, 1/27/10)

One of our readers sent this thoughtful evaluation of the Massachusetts election and the impact it might have on our future:
“The election in Massachusetts is one of the most important elections in the history of the United States(America).  What just happened is a mid-course forced correction in the Obama plan for health care and  the handling of terrorism.  In addition the spector of socialism has been retarded somewhat by changing the face of America through the vote.  In fact the arrogrance of the elected democratic leaders in both houses and the executive branch is now forced to step back and re-think their course and how to best implement their plans to socialize America.  (more…)

Our Most Important Weapon

Filed under: The City's Pulse — mary @ 1:04 pm

Senator-elect Scott Brown

What a difference a week makes.  Last Tuesday, Scott Brown, the Republican Senatorial candidate won the Massachusetts’ special election.  It was a huge upset. Within just days, the impact of this historic election became clear: Health care legislation is now “on hold”, the President is getting “folksy” trying to join up with the common man and “relate” to our anger, and many congressmen, of both stripes, are suddenly speaking up for the “little guy”.

What does all of this show?  WE, THE PEOPLE, HAVE POWER!  And our power is in our vote.  It is our most important weapon in the fight to gain back our freedom.   (more…)

“Citizen” asks, “Looks like Jai Nelson is throwing her hat in the ring and is running against Rick Curry for commissioner. She believes the rural community is under represented. All our commissioners live in urban settings. Does anyone have any opinions on the subject?”

Here’s the link to this morning’s Press article about Jai’s announcement.

What a beautiful view of CdA Lake in winter.  We have national election impacts, County comprehensive plan efforts and local tax questions as possible items to discuss.  Who wants to go first?  Any ideas?

Do Ads help NIC?

Filed under: General — mary @ 9:01 am

Here’s an interesting email from one of our readers.  Do you agree?

Hi Mary!  I’ve always been perturbed about the amount of money NIC obviously spends advertising its program to the public at large.  I’m talking about billboards, movie theaters, television, etc.  I see their messages all the time so it’s not just a small campaign.  I doubt if the advertisements are really reaching many potential students who don’t already know of the programs they offer so they probably aren’t cost effective.  I also question why a public education institution feels it has the money to spend and need to advertise its programs that much.  They could get free public announcement spots for most of their information.

Let the Bloodletting Begin!

And now the government is demanding more money.  It’s starting here with the Idaho Unemployment Tax, which is one of the many taxes businesses are required to pay.  Our unemployment tax rates have QUADRUPLED since 2008, with this year’s new rate fully 3 times higher than last year’s.

Does this make businesses want to hire more folks?  Nope.  And this is just the beginning.  Wait until all the other taxes start piling on…NIC, city, county, state, federal.

Job creation?  Don’t hold your breath.

Mary Souza’s Newsletter — Follow Up!

Dear Readers,
My newsletter from last Friday was about NIC’s abrupt firing of Dr. Robert Ketchum, the respected director of NIC’s Work Force Training Center in Post Falls.  The previous evening, the Post Falls Chamber of Commerce held its annual banquet, and Dr. Ketchum attended, as did  NIC’s President, Priscilla Bell.  (I bet they weren’t sitting at the same table!)

Several of my newsletter readers were at the Chamber banquet and emailed me with their outrage at what happened.  Here’s a sampling of their candor:  (more…)
