So…What’s the Problem?

Today’s Coeur d’Alene Press has a follow-up article which confirms  Mary Souza’s Newsletter report on October 29 that the Kootenai County Clerk, Tote-a-Vote Dan English ,  intends to open absentee ballot envelopes starting Monday, a day before the Tuesday election, in clear violation of Idaho election laws.  So, why are the ballot envelopes being opened early?  More importantly, why is this a problem?  Read on.  (more…)

It’s Not New

Some people have sent emails to me concerning the notice in the Coeur d’Alene Press today that Assistant US Attorney Nancy Cook would be the on-duty AUSA Tuesday in Coeur d’Alene to take complaints of voter fraud.  For several years now the US Department of Justice has designated one or more AUSAs in each federal judicial district to take these types of complaints on general election day.    Here is the DoJ press release explaining it further.

And Again …

An article in this morning’s Coeur d’Alene Press reveals that once again, Kootenai County Clerk Dan English has chosen to ignore the law.  This time, he has directed his staff to participate in electioneering by handing out cards with the names of write-in candidates.

Tim Hurst, chief deputy secretary of state, said, “That’s akin to electioneering at the polls.”  Akin to electioneering?  No, that is electioneering.  Idaho Code 18-2318(1)(b) prohibits circulating cards or handbills “of any kind” within 100 feet of a polling place on the day of election.  I presume that “on the day of any … election” means on any day the polling place is open to voting, including early voting.

And what did English say?  According to the article, he had gotten approval from an employee at the Secretary of State’s Office.  If he got approval as the newspaper article said, it’s because he sought approval — not because he asked if it was lawful.  Isn’t that the “Nuremberg Defense?”

I went to the Kootenai County Republican Central Committee (KCRCC) meeting last night, and it was packed.  Standing room only and not much of that left either.  (more…)

According to independent accounts, Kootenai County Clerk Dan English has decided to once again disobey Idaho law.   This time he has decided to open absentee ballots on Monday, November 1 so they can be more quickly counted on Tuesday, November 2.  Different sources say English told them he had the Secretary of State’s permission to do that.  So what’s the problem?

It’s against the law. (more…)

Voter Fraud in Vegas?

Filed under: General — mary @ 11:45 am

Did you see the newest headline on the Drudge Report?:  ” I WENT TO VOTE AND HARRY REID’S NAME WAS ALREADY CHECKED!” It appears that more than a few folks in Nevada are complaining that when they’ve gone into their voting booths, the electronic touch screen they use to vote  is already checked for Harry Reid!

Of course the Election Officials claim there is “no fraud” and that the voters must “have faith in the system”.

Sound familiar?

Open Session: Tea Party Rescues GOP

Filed under: Open Session — mary @ 10:15 am

In a great column yesterday in the Wall Street Journal, Peggy Noonan writes about how the GOP has not been hurt by the Tea Party movement.  Quite the opposite.  She says the Tea Partiers have rescued the Republican party.  It is well worth the read.  Here’s the link: Tea Party to the Rescue!

Any comments on this or other issues?

Next Stop — Coeur d’Alene?

In his online publication The Boise Guardian, Sam Adams Alliance award winning writer David Frazier reports that the State of Idaho is setting up a business to directly compete with the private sector businesses in Boise.  His article is titled State Owned Tax-Exempt Commercial Storage, Competes with Private Business.

Please read Frazier’s article carefully.  It shows a pattern that may be replicated throughout the state.
