Open Session: You Get NO Vote!

Filed under: Open Session — mary @ 9:49 am

Here’s a replay of a great Jimmy Barona cartoon from ’08. Sandi Bloem said NO VOTE on the Ed Corridor, and now, in 2011, she’s saying NO VOTE on the renovations to McEuen Field and Tubb’s Hill.

Our Mayor is trying to take away our RIGHT to a vote on major spending projects whose cost is beyond the yearly budget of the City.  State law REQUIRES the City to get a vote of the people for any indebtedness beyond the yearly budget unless a judge rules the expenditure “ordinary and necessary”.

So, how can they get away with this?  By using LCDC’s taxpayer money to bypass the voters.  And LCDC can take out a bond without a public vote—the city cannot.

“NO VOTE FOR YOU!  PAY UP, even though we don’t know how much it will cost.  Dream Big!”

Why Now?

Why is the City pushing the remodel of McEuen Field right now?

The plan unveiled to the public last week is elaborate. It proposes a huge number of new features, many of them extremely expensive, though the City has openly stated they don’t know what anything will cost.  The price of the parking garage alone is estimated by some in the construction industry to be near $35 Million, never mind the gigantic half acre fountain (one of 5 or 6 proposed water features right next to the lake), two bridges, the ice skating pond with canopy, several buildings, many new sports courts, a new skate board park and more.

Yet the unemployment rate in our community remains at almost 11%. That is very high. People are hurting. One long time resident on a fixed income, told me his property taxes went up $300 this year and he doesn’t know how he will pay.  School District 271 just announced their large new levy which, if approved, will add $68 more dollars to my friend’s tax bill, and NIC, with their Ed. Corridor, will almost certainly pile on as well.  (more…)

McEuen plan 2011

An alert reader told me that our urban renewal thread of conversation has turned into a McEuen discussion, so I copied the errant posts and put them here.  Feel free to respond to the issues about the park, or start your own topic on any thought you might have …it’s an Open Session.

Biggest Challenges and Surprises?

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 4:41 pm

Several new Kootenai County officials were sworn in today.  The new executives include County Commissioners Dan Green and Jai Nelson, Coroner Deb Wilkey, and County Clerk Cliff Hayes.

What do you think the biggest challenges are for each of the new executives?  What do you think the biggest surprises will be for each?

Opportunites Abound in CdA!

(NOT Mary Souza!)

Mary Souza’s Newsletter

I went to the McEuen Field Open House at NIC Thursday night, presented by the City.  What a show!  It was awesome!  There were so many fancy features! I can’t stop using exclamation points because of all the amazing things we have the opportunity to get!  And we don’t need to worry about how to pay for them!  Isn’t that great?!

Parks Director Doug Eastwood actually said to the overwhelming crowd that filled the room to capacity, with standing room maxed all around the edges, all across the back, out the door and completely covering the upper landing of the NIC Student Union building…it was an enormous turnout…anyway, Doug said, “Once the project has been generally accepted by the public and the city council has given its approval, then we’ll figure out how to pay for it.”

It was a Nancy Pelosi moment!  (Just pass the bill then we’ll figure out what’s in it!)  (more…)

Crowd Control?

Doug Eastwood

Do you plan on standing up and publicly voicing  your opinion tomorrow at the McEuen Field meeting?  Think again.

I emailed CdA Parks Director Doug Eastwood, asking him if there will be a time for public comments tomorrow.  Here is his (very carefully worded) response:

“We will want to get comments from everyone in attendance.  After the presentation everyone will have a questionnaire on the various elements of the park project and they will have the opportunity to meet with and/or discuss the elements with the design team during the open house.  Anyone that has a question or a comment will be able to provide that to the design team so they can get an answer to them.  All of the comments and questions will be posted on the web site soon after the meeting.”

Important Reminder!
