Over and Over Again

Government at Work?

This was nearly what we had at the CdA City Council meeting last night!  During the “‘Public Comments” part of the meeting, while citizens gave their impassioned thoughts on subjects from dog parks to boat launches,  nearly every member of our city council was looking down.  Were they writing?  Were they snoozing?  No one can be sure.  But their job is to give their ATTENTION to the people who take the time to come out and speak, in public, about a topic that concerns them.  I’m embarrassed by the lack of basic manners shown over and over again by the behavior of our mayor and city council.

They don’t need to take notes, they have two paid staff members taking notes during the whole meeting  (clerk Susan Weathers and administrator Wendy Gabriel), plus the meeting is recorded.  The mayor and council should be making eye contact, actively listening and asking questions.  What do you think?

Did He Really Say That?

The Idaho Statesman ran an Associated Press article headlined Idaho leaders discuss security post-bin Laden.  The article quotes Idaho State Police Major Kevin Hudgens (shown left) as saying, “We’re asking our troopers out on the road to be a little more diligent … keeping their eyes open a little more than they normally would for the next couple of days.”  So, if not fully open, what condition would an on-duty ISP Trooper’s eyes “normally” be in?

It is certain that within a month, books and movies about the US special operations forces will appear on the market.  Most of them are likely to focus on the Naval Special Warfare Development Group.

If you’re interested in a broader overview of the history and development of the US special operations forces from each of the military services, here is a link to the Department of Defense publication USSOCOM Fact Book – 2010.

What Do You Think?

Former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich

The Chicago Sun-Times newspaper is reporting that the Illinois State Police secretly worked with the Federal Bureau of Investigation to conceal an FBI electronic surveillance on then-Governor Rod Blagojevich’s campaign office.  (See State Police secretly worked with FBI in bugging Rod Blagojevich.)

In discussing the agency’s protective responsibilities,  former state police Director Terrance W. Gainer said:

“That’s where some elected leaders get it wrong. You are not loyal to the person. You are loyal to the office,” Gainer said. “Again, policemen are supposed to remember they took that oath and put the badge on. You don’t owe blind allegiance to those elected officials.”

What do you think?  Is a law enforcement officer’s responsibility to the law or to the person who appointed him or her?  Do you think a local, county, or state police agency should cooperate with the FBI (and other federal agencies) investigating allegations of public corruption among the agency’s elected overseers?

Doing It Right – Preserving Public Trust

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 7:33 pm

The College of Southern Idaho (CSI) deserves an attaboy for rebuilding the public’s trust. CSI is one of Idaho’s community colleges, and according to an article titled CSI board shakes up old ways, it took the replacement of a couple of CSI’s Trustees to make it happen. The article was written by Ben Botkin and appeared on April 30, 2011, in MagicValley.com, the online version of the Twin Falls Times-News(more…)
