Open Session, Summer

We might have a few nice weather days ahead…what’s on your mind?

The Federal government can’t seem to get its act together, with the Republicans offering several debt management plans, and Democrat leader Harry Reid pledging to squash the bills coming from the House. Nice mess.

Meanwhile, back in North Idaho, the City of Hayden just proposed a 3% budget increase, adds no new positions and gives no raises to any of their employees. Rathdrum offers a 1% budget increase with no new positions and no pay raises for anyone. Coeur d’Alene has proposed no budget increase but wants a 3% raise for everyone and almost half of them would get up to 8%. The CdA city council will meet this Tues. to decide.  Your thoughts?

Open Session, Thursday

Filed under: General — mary @ 11:08 am

It’s summer, but beneath the quiet warm-ish days there are important local issues being discussed.  The city wants to give not only a 3% raise to all its employees, but wants to add 8% merit pay for almost half of them! (latest unemployment figures for CdA = 11.8%)

Last night there was a meeting about the East Sherman neighborhood problem with the Fresh Start homeless center. The neighbors were told by city councilman Mike Kennedy that they, the citizens, need to monitor the problems, take photos, gather evidence and report to the city. Is that the job of citizens?  You can read the Press article here.  Your thoughts on this or any other topic…

Election Contest Update

Today I attended the pre-trial conference of Susan Harris and Ronald Prior.  They were each charged one count of violating Idaho Code 18-2322 – Illegal Registration by Voter in the November 3, 2009, Coeur d’Alene City election.   The conduct of that election was contested by Jim Brannon.  Harris and Prior were scheduled to go to trial later in July, however Magistrate Judge Burton accepted an Alford Plea from both of them today and fined each of them $200 and gave them each 90 days unsupervised probation.

In an Alford Plea, the defendant does not admit the act, but admits that the prosecution could likely prove the charge at trial. The court then  pronounces the defendant guilty.

Otto Zehm

The Coeur d’Alene Press has posted online a press release issued by the Coeur d’Alene Police Department.  The press release states that Nicholas Andrew Clason, age 30, of Spokane died Thursday at Kootenai Medical Center after being taken into custody by the Coeur d’Alene Police Department on Sunday, July 10, 2011.  The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department is reportedly the lead investigative agency.

The circumstances reported in the Coeur d’Alene Police Department press release invite some comparisons to Otto Zehm’s death while in custody of the Spokane Police Department in March 2006.  (more…)

3% Pay Raise for City…Really?…Now?

Filed under: General — mary @ 10:30 am

CdA has a current unemployment rate of 11.8%. That’s UP  .5% from the previous month. It’s much higher than the state average of 9.4%, but our city officials are now proposing a 3% budget increase so they can give pay raises to the city employees to fulfill the union’s stipulations.

You can read today’s Press article on the proposed budget increase here.
You can read about the latest unemployment statistics here.

What do you think? When’s the last raise you received?

A Good Issue For Discussion

Friday’s Coeur d’Alene Press published an article headlined Prosecutor denies activist’s appeal.  One comment appended to the article’s online posting was from a commenter using the pseudonym “progressive.”  Referring to the lawsuit Larry Spencer, Tom Macy, and I filed against NIC and the NIC Foundation, “progressive” said, ” I I just wish that the taxpayers could counter sue these sue happy clowns for all of the legal costs that they have cost us.”  Our lawsuit revealed that NIC had paid $6,720,029.87 in rent on land it already owned and that NIC had made no effort to recover the overpayment.

Nevertheless, “progressive” raised a good issue for discussion:   If our lawsuit against NIC and the NIC Foundation was not the appropriate action for us to take, what should we have done instead?

Wow! Teachers cheating for 10 years?

Filed under: General — mary @ 11:00 am

Many folks questioning their local governance are met with incredulous responses like, “Do you think all these people could be in collusion…that would be impossible!” Well, here it is, people:

A state investigation reveals that 200 Atlanta school district officials and teachers  cheated on test score results for the last decade, even winning awards based on their fraudulent results.

You’ve got to read this one in the Washington Times.
