Open Session, Friday

Filed under: Open Session — mary @ 10:10 am

Remember our recent winters? Mother Nature is being kind, so far, as many important issues continue to swirl:

1. The CdA City Council & City Attorney obviously don’t understand the new election law.

2. Commissioners Dan Green & Jai Nelson spoke yesterday, at Reagan Republicans, about many things including possible changes in the number of commissioners.

3. The McEuen workshop this morning was to reveal what’s included in Phase I and the budget to go along with it.

What are your thoughts, ideas or questions?

So Long, Jack…

Filed under: Probable Cause — Tags: — Bill @ 7:27 am

Thanks to OpenCdA commenter Justinian for the heads-up that former Prince George’s County, Maryland, county executive Jack Johnson has been sentenced to seven years in federal prison for his part in an extensive public corruption scheme.

The Washington Times reports that U.S. District Court Judge Peter J. Messitte summarized the severity of Johnson’s corruption thus:  “This was not a single act of bribery.  This was not a simple wrong turn. This was a deliberate march down a long path of kleptocracy.”

At his sentencing hearing, Johnson pleaded for mercy, citing a recent diagnosis of some form of Parkinsonism.

Johnson also cited a litany of the “good works” he had performed as the county’s prosecutor and county executive.   In response to this particular justification for mercy, Judge Messitte’s reply was right on the money:  “”If you’ve done them, good for you.  That’s what you were elected to do. You were not elected to line your pockets, you were not elected to corrupt the system the way you did.”

Judge Messitte’s response was concise and to the point.  It needs to be digested by public officials throughout the United States.  Working for your constituents, all of them and not just a select few, is what you were elected to do.  You were not elected to line your pockets, and you were not elected to corrupt the system for your own personal profit.

So long, Jack.

Did Mike Really Win?

Mary Souza’s Newsletter

New information has recently been discovered about the controversial CdA election of 2009, and it sheds even more doubt on the validity of Mike Kennedy’s victory.

I’m sure you are all aware that Cliff Hayes, our new County Clerk, and his staff have spent months scouring the rolls of registered voters, verifying addresses and making certain that voters are listed only for the elections under which they qualify. (more…)

Killing a Monster

As the people of Idaho are learning, once a monster has been created, it’s not easy to kill it.  It’s even more difficult when the state legislature doesn’t really want it to die.

In a November 27, 2011, article headlined Urban renewal options, the Coeur d’Alene Press reminded its readers that Idaho’s urban renewal agencies are a creation of the Idaho legislature, not the municipalities which host them.  The urban renewal agencies are a separate political subdivision of the state, not a department of their host municipality.  (more…)
