A Shining Example of Community Excellence

Filed under: Probable Cause — Tags: — Bill @ 7:17 am

This morning’s Coeur d’Alene Press included a guest opinion column written by Coeur d’Alene resident Bruce MacNeil.  His thoughtful and insightful work was titled Recall a matter of accountability.

Bruce can hardly be characterized as one of those naysayers, anarchists, and rabble-rousers who hate parks and the people who appreciate them.  Follow this link to the City’s webpage titled Parks Master Plan, and on the second page of Acknowledgements under the heading Master Plan Planning Advisory Committee, you’ll see his name (misspelled, but still there).

County Press Release – Recall Election Violations

Filed under: Probable Cause — Tags: — Bill @ 12:44 pm

Kootenai County Clerk Cliff Hayes has just issued a press release outlining potentially unlawful practices associated with the recall action underway in Coeur d’Alene.

This information was previously reported in our OpenCdA post on April 9, titled Hey!  Let’s Be Careful Out There… .   Our OpenCdA post went further and described how merely soliciting someone to commit the violations itemized in the County’s press release could be a separate criminal violation of Criminal Solicitation.

“Facts Rule” — Coeur d’Alene Press Editorial

On Sunday, April 15, 2012, the Coeur d’Alene Press published an unsigned editorial titled “All eyes on recall.”  The gist of the editorial was summarized  by these two sentences midway through it:  “Our purpose today is not to pick sides in this fight but to define some Opinion page rules as the recall effort proceeds. And No. 1 is, facts rule – yes, even when it comes to opinions.”

OpenCdA was pleasantly surprised to see what we believed at the time was an honest commitment by the Press editorial board, a commitment to not pick sides in the recall effort and to ensure that even in opinion writings such as letters to the editor, “facts rule.”

We at OpenCdA were wrong, and we sadly admit today that we, like others in the community,  bought into the deception game the Coeur d’Alene Press is playing with  its readers. (more…)

At the Heart of Recall CdA

Filed under: Probable Cause — Tags: — Bill @ 8:44 am

More and more people in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and the surrounding communities are taking an interest in a citizens group’s efforts to recall Coeur d’Alene Mayor Sandi Bloem, City Council President Mike Kennedy, Councilman Woody McEvers, and Councilman Deanna Goodlander.  As expected, those unable or unwilling to address community concerns have begun attacking the citizens who raise those concerns.

One of the concerns raised is that the officials subject to recall have failed to listen, really listen, to the citizens’ concerns.   (more…)

Decide for Yourself

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 10:12 am

This morning’s Coeur d’Alene Press printed a letter to the editor by Eden Irgens.

Her letter is useful to show how disinformation (also called black propaganda) works.  Disinformation has likely been employed by various governments for as long as governments have known deception is a useful way to influence people.  The key to the success of a disinformation operation is that almost all of the information must be correct and reasonably easily verifiable so that it can withstand casual scrutiny.   The hope, of course, is that the kernel of deception will be missed and then accepted as factual as readily as the accurate information.  (more…)

Clarification

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 12:51 pm

This morning’s Coeur d’Alene Press correctly reported that “… the McEuen Field website that showed the original, high-end $39.2 million estimate for the downtown park conceptual plan” had been taken down.

However, that webpage is on the Coeur d’Alene City website under the home page button “City Info,” Reports & Studies link.  It’s just much more difficult for those pesky fact-checkers to find.

In the news article Parks Director/Chief Lawn Mower Doug Eastwood commented,  ” ‘It’s ancient information,’ Eastwood said of the $39 million figure. ‘When concepts change we don’t keep outdated information.’ ”

Since the City is, in fact, keeping the information,  has the concept not changed or is the information still not outdated?

“Readers, Speak Up!”

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 9:01 am

One of our readers contacted us and suggested we “allow readers to request daily topic for discussion  inserts.  You could then choose the good, the bad, and an ugly for direct discussion, or in other words, let OpenCDA be open so we can see where it leads.”

It’s a good idea.  We want to put up local topics for discussion that readers want to discuss.

If you have an idea for a topic, send it to us via email (Do not attach it as a comment to another post!).  We’ll look at it and decide if it should be posted as submitted, revised, or not posted at all.  But we’re going to shift the burden back on the person who originally submitted it.  If you suggested it, you should be the person to lead off the discussion.

We’ll try it and see if it works.  Thanks to the person who suggested it.
