On Friday, December 12, 2008, Oregon State Police Senior Trooper/Bomb Technician Bill Hakim and Woodburn, Oregon, police Captain Tom Tennant were killed when an explosive device they were handling detonated inside a bank in Woodburn, Oregon.  Woodburn Police Chief Scott Russell was critically injured. What happened in Woodburn could happen anywhere.

Christmas & Classical Concert

On Saturday, December 20th, at 2 p.m. Leslie Stratton Norris and the Ladies of the Lake Harp Ensemble will present a free concert of Christmas and classical music at the Coeur d’Alene Public Library, Community Room (downstairs), 702 E. Front Avenue, Coeur d’Alene.  The concert usually lasts approximately one hour.  Bring the family!

On the Brighter Side…

Remember the Iraqi newsman who threw two shoes at President Bush during a news conference in the Green Zone — and missed with both?  Apparently the Iraqis took him outside and beat the daylights out of him. But there’s good news.  Seattle Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik has offered him a five-year, multimillion dollar contract to pitch for the Mariners, reasoning the newsman came closer to throwing a strike than any of the Mariners’ pitching staff.

Former Whitworth University Trustee to Prison

Saturday’s Seattle Times is reporting that former Whitworth University trustee Tom Delanty has been sentenced to five years in prison for stealing about $150,000 from an elderly lady while serving as her financial advisor.   The larger question is why he was ever selected to serve as a college trustee.  There is a local lesson here.

School District 271 Update

If you missed School District 271 Superintendent Hazel Bauman’s op-ed piece in the Coeur d’Alene Press today, here’s a link to it.  She notes the school district plans, “…to schedule a series of school board workshops/community forums just after the first of the year to share our findings and get public comment.”

FBI Investigations of Public Corruption Increasing

Wednesday’s Cleveland Plain Dealer reports the FBI is devoting more special agents to public corruption cases now than it has in years.  “The agency has 2,500 bribery-related investigations nationwide, a 50 percent increase from five years ago.”
