Declaring An Emergency

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 7:22 am

schoolhouseI attended Wednesday night’s special meeting of the School District 271 Board of Trustees.  The first action item was “Patron Comment to receive input concerning possible solutions to the Financial Emergency.”  The meeting was reported in today’s Coeur d’Alene Press in Maureen Dolan’s article headlined Schools may declare financial 911.  Neither the meeting nor the article explained the process required by Idaho Code for schools to declare a financial emergency.  Here are two links to clarify that process. Threatening Protests

This was sent by one of our readers who is originally from the UK.  This news has not been covered by US media.  If some people thought our Tea Party protests were out of line, check this out:

“I was standing at a bus stop in Kensington, London minding my own business when suddenly I thought I was in the Middle East – 1979 – the chanting was DEATH TO AMERICA … and I realized the British govermnent was allowing these demonstrations to go on  – it was disheartening —by the grace of God I was able to come to America – take a look in 2009 how confident these guys are now . . . .

Where is the U.S. Media on this one?  I want to hear more about this if anyone knows anything about it . . . .

180px-david-ortiz-batters-box School activities cuts?  The levy passed after the full-page ad last week which frightened the bee-geebers out of all the parents.  It claimed that, if the levy failed, there would be NO athletics, debate, music or activities programs, among other outrageous claims like no maintenance, no secretaries, etc.  When I saw that heavy-handed scare ad, I was upset.  But the levy passed, so what’s up with the cuts?

Any comments on this or other subjects?

Worried about Swine Flu?

Filed under: General — mary @ 6:05 pm

250px-symptoms_of_swine_flusvg I’m having a personal flashback.  In 1976, I was a brand new nurse and everyone in the hospital was encouraged/required to get a Swine Flu Vaccination because we were in contact with the public.  Of course, we did.  Two days later I was sick, seriously sick.  I was admitted to the hospital and put in respiratory isolation for several days.  I recovered without further incident  and never sued the government like so many other people did at the time.  But I’ve not been allowed to get flu shots since.  Now I’m wondering…do I have some resistance to the swine flu, since maybe I had some form of it? Or am I more at risk?  Are you worried about this current outbreak?

Here’s some history of President Ford’s 1976 decision to “hurry up” the development of the swine flu shot: (more…)

Stimson DeArmond Mill Site Remediation Draft Plan

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 12:13 pm

great-seal-of-idahoThe Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is seeking public comment on a draft work plan to clean up contamination at the former Stimson DeArmond Saw Mill property, located at 927 River Ave., Coeur d’Alene.  The 17-acre property is contaminated with petroleum products from historic lumber, petroleum, and pole yard operations. The purpose of the work plan is to describe the proposed cleanup method selected and its implementation.

This includes the property North Idaho College proposes to lease from the North Idaho College Foundation which hopes to buy it from Marshall Chesrown to be used to expand the existing North Idaho College campus.   Locally this project is being promoted as “the Education Corridor.”

Predictions from 1970

Earth Day Symbol

Earth Day Symbol

One of our astute readers sent me this information about the very first Earth Day back in 1970.  Predictions from that  first Earth Day  might surprise you.  Take a look:

Denis Hayes, the chief organizer for the first Earth Day, wrote, “It is already too late to avoid mass starvation.”

Senator Gaylord Nelson, the founder of Earth Day, stated, “Dr. S. Dillon Ripley, secretary of the Smithsonian Institute, believes that in 25 years, somewhere between 75 and 80 percent of all the species of living animals will be extinct.” (more…)

There They Go Again

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 11:23 am

money-burning1My January 10, 2009, post titled “What?” pointed out that the City of Coeur d’Alene plans to spend as much as $100,000 to commission a piece of artwork for the east end of Sherman Avenue.

That project has not yet begun and once again the City plans to spend even more money on “public art.”  This time the City wants to spend as much as $20,000 for “4 free-standing sculptures that can serve as bike racks”  for Midtown.  Yikes!

Fighting Public Corruption

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 12:17 pm

fitzgerald-1Patrick Fitzgerald, the US Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, addressed the University of Washington’s Evans School of Public Affairs on Thursday, April 23.  His topic was Serving the Public: Ethics and Public Office.    Fitzgerald’s office  recently brought now-pending fraud and bribery charges against former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich.  He was special prosecutor in the trial and conviction of Vice President Cheney’s chief of staff I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby.
