001Well known local community volunteer and retired Physical Therapist, Lee Shellman, died suddenly last night of an apparent heart attack.

Here’s what Lee’s son Scott wrote to friends this morning:

“Hello Friends:
I want to let you know that my dad passed away last night after suffering a heart attack.  He drove his boat across Hayden Lake at about sunset (it was an absolutely stellar sunset last night), and called for help from the boat ramp where an unknown bystander stayed with him.  He was brought back a few times, but couldn’t fight his weakened heart.  We were able to say our goodbyes last night as he slipped away.”

250px-Sarah_Palin_portraitSarah Palin took North Idaho by storm yesterday!  She signed books for 1200 who stood in line for up to 13 hours, here in CdA, and another 700 people up in Sandpoint.  All in one day!  Any comments on Gov. Palin’s visit or any other news?

Amended Complaint Filed in Election Lawsuit

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 8:22 pm

NewsBulletin copyAn amended complaint was filed with the First District Court today by Plaintiff Jim Brannon in his lawsuit challenging the November 3, 2009, Coeur d’Alene city election.

The amendment filed today (included without attachments) removes Kootenai County, County Clerk Dan English, and former Kootenai County Election Administrator Deedie Beard as defendants in the case.  It also seeks an injunction preventing the City from “installing” new City Council members at its first meeting in January 2010.  This was requested because if the “new” City Council is “installed” and the election, all or part, is ultimately set aside, the newly installed status could bring into question the legality of business conducted in the interim. I was reviewing Councilman Deanna Goodlander’s 30-Day Post-General Election Campaign Financial Report and noticed that Robert C. Samuel, 5141 N. 40th, Phoenix, AZ, had donated $500 to her reelection campaign.  Who is Robert C. Samuel?

180px-Lego_Mindstorms_NXT_Robot The First Lego League robotics tournament was at Post Falls High School on Saturday, and it was the LARGEST IN THE WORLD!  There were 67 teams competing, so, with all the kids, coaches, parents and volunteers, there were probably 2000 people there.  I was a volunteer and was amazed and impressed with the skill, motivation, enthusiasm and teamwork of the kids, who were 4th — 8th graders.  This morning’s CdA Press referred to the tournament as “sports for nerds”, but these kids were anything but nerdy—they were outgoing, fun, cool kids, who are also very smart.  Good on them!

According to a reliable source, Judge John Mitchell has disqualified himself from the lawsuit filed by Jim Brannon to contest the city election on November 3.  Judge Mitchell cited personal associations with some of the principals in the case.  His disqualification had not been requested by Jim Brannon.  It is speculated that one of the First District Court judges from out of the area will be brought in to hear the lawsuit in Coeur d’Alene.

Look for the Silver Lining

The legal challenge to the recent Coeur d’Alene city elections could end up helping all voters in Idaho.  The silver lining in this stormy tussle is that the election laws of our state will be examined in fine detail by lawyers, judges, media and the public.

And some close scrutiny is probably long overdue.

Did you know that to get a hunting or fishing license here, you must prove that you’ve lived here for SIX MONTHS?  If you don’t have a driver’s license, you have to prove your residency by showing TWO of the following:

The Bashing Begins

Filed under: General — mary @ 10:10 am

Jim Brannon_webIn an obvious effort to distract from the main issue of ELECTION INTEGRITY, bloggers elsewhere have started bashing Jim Brannon for his legal challenge of the local election.  They are attacking Jim on a personal level rather than discussing the rights of the electorate to have confidence in the honesty and efficiency of the system.

Idaho election laws have some serious problems!  This is the first time a local election in CdA has been this close.  After the results showed only a FIVE VOTE difference, Jim looked into the idea of a recount.  But the law says that recounts can only be the same ballots counted by the same people in the exact same manner as they were the first time. No examination of the ballots, no hand recount allowed.  The only difference would be that more officials would be watching.  (more…)
