Tales from the Recall Front

Filed under: The City's Pulse — mary @ 4:02 pm

Mary Souza’s Newsletter

It has been a very interesting first week of the Recall CdA effort! You may have noticed the many prominent negative news articles, letters to the Editor and blog comments trying to besmirch the Recall.  You may have noticed a nearby town publicly admonishing the Recall. And you may have noticed our former Lt. Governor and owner of Pita Pit, Jack Riggs, labeling the Recall CdA effort as “un-American”.

All of them are out of line.  The Recall is one of the most American of endeavors. Abraham Lincoln said that we have a government “of the people, by the people and for the people.” Our Idaho State Constitution says “All political power in inherent in the people.  Government is instituted for their equal protection and benefit, and they have the right to alter, reform or abolish the same whenever they may deem it necessary.”  What part of this Recall, undertaken by the people and according to state law, is “un-American”?  (more…)

This morning’s Coeur d’Alene Press printed a letter to the editor by Eden Irgens.

Her letter is useful to show how disinformation (also called black propaganda) works.  Disinformation has likely been employed by various governments for as long as governments have known deception is a useful way to influence people.  The key to the success of a disinformation operation is that almost all of the information must be correct and reasonably easily verifiable so that it can withstand casual scrutiny.   The hope, of course, is that the kernel of deception will be missed and then accepted as factual as readily as the accurate information.  (more…)

Clarification

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 12:51 pm

This morning’s Coeur d’Alene Press correctly reported that “… the McEuen Field website that showed the original, high-end $39.2 million estimate for the downtown park conceptual plan” had been taken down.

However, that webpage is on the Coeur d’Alene City website under the home page button “City Info,” Reports & Studies link.  It’s just much more difficult for those pesky fact-checkers to find.

In the news article Parks Director/Chief Lawn Mower Doug Eastwood commented,  ” ‘It’s ancient information,’ Eastwood said of the $39 million figure. ‘When concepts change we don’t keep outdated information.’ ”

Since the City is, in fact, keeping the information,  has the concept not changed or is the information still not outdated?

“Readers, Speak Up!”

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 9:01 am

One of our readers contacted us and suggested we “allow readers to request daily topic for discussion  inserts.  You could then choose the good, the bad, and an ugly for direct discussion, or in other words, let OpenCDA be open so we can see where it leads.”

It’s a good idea.  We want to put up local topics for discussion that readers want to discuss.

If you have an idea for a topic, send it to us via email (Do not attach it as a comment to another post!).  We’ll look at it and decide if it should be posted as submitted, revised, or not posted at all.  But we’re going to shift the burden back on the person who originally submitted it.  If you suggested it, you should be the person to lead off the discussion.

We’ll try it and see if it works.  Thanks to the person who suggested it.

“Hey! Let’s Be Careful Out There!”

Filed under: Probable Cause — Tags: — Bill @ 4:00 am

“Hey!  Let’s be careful out there.” Those of us old enough to remember the 1980’s television series “Hill Street Blues” will likely recall that heartfelt admonition at the end of the shift’s roll call by Hill Street police precinct SGT Phil Esterhaus (actor Michael Conrad).  Everyone in the Recall CdA effort as well as those who just as passionately oppose the recall and are intent on undermining it need to listen, too.

Lawful recall and anti-recall actions are protected by the Idaho Constitution and by Idaho statutes.  Everyone involved in the recall or anti-recall efforts needs to be extremely careful to not violate the protected rights and privileges of others.   Those violations may manifest themselves as criminal violations of law. Rise Above

Filed under: General — mary @ 9:41 pm

On this eve of the Easter holiday, please allow me a short, personal plea: Let’s rise above the muck and propaganda promoted by the blogs and the Anti-recall alliance.  They are attacking everyone who wants to have a vote.  They are especially targeting me, I’m told, though I honestly am not reading any of it…I’m too busy helping to get the Recall up and running.  Their personal attacks show an increasing level of fear on their parts; they are not addressing any of the issues.

Anyone can go to my free archive web site, www.marysouzacda.com, find the “search” field at the top and type in any subject or name and it will bring up any and all columns or newsletters I have ever written on the topics.  Read for yourselves if I have ever stooped to personal attacks.  I have not.  My critical observations are only in the context of a public official’s behavior in their job.

If you can prove me wrong, or find any mean statements or lies, please email me at marysouzacda@gmail.com and I will be happy to respond.

Meanwhile I will not pay attention to the blogs or the banter.  We have work to do!  I will be focusing on gathering the signatures to put the names of Mayor Sandi Bloem, Council members Mike Kennedy, Deanna Goodlander and Woody McEvers on the ballot in November so that ALL the voters of CdA can have a voice in whether to keep them or remove them from their positions.  It will be our public vote.

Happy Easter to you and may we all be inspired to rise above the fray and keep our eye on the prize.  –Mary

With the addition of the outdoor sign, the Recall CdA Headquarters at 296 W. Sunset Avenue, Suite 21, Coeur d’Alene, ID, is almost ready to open.  It is in the Sunset Village mall next to Wild Birds Unlimited and Las Chevelas Mexican Restaurant and is easily seen from US 95.  The most convenient street entrance is from Bosanko, then turn into the parking lot.

It’s Our Town Too

Mary Souza’s Newsletter

Wednesday morning we woke to awful weather and by 9:30, when we got down to City Hall, the snow was falling fast and the wind was whipping.  It was cold!  I didn’t expect many folks would brave the elements, but I was wrong.  There was already a crowd when I arrived and they kept coming.  Signs, smiles and determined spirits.  A sense of camaraderie and the courage to take a stand for the right to vote.  Just over 100 people turned out and stayed for an hour.  I was so impressed!

The Press article the next day was demeaning.  They called it a “dud”.  They underplayed the turnout and said “about 75”, even though the Press reporter told me at the rally that he counted 100.  They twisted the info and tried to make the Recall group look disorganized.  But we will not be dismayed.  We will move forward and keep our eyes on the prize, which is our VOTE.  (more…)

“Color of Law”

Filed under: Probable Cause — Tags: — Bill @ 1:21 pm

The Coeur d’Alene Press online is reporting that, “The Coeur d’Alene Police Association … does not support the effort to recall Coeur d’Alene City Council members McEvers, Kennedy, Goodlander and Mayor Bloem, and that they ‘strongly support’ the officials for their continued work on behalf of the city.”

All public employees including police officers have exactly the same rights as all other citizens, and OpenCdA encourages them to exercise those rights freely and lawfully.

OpenCdA also wishes to remind the members of the Coeur d’Alene Police Association that like any other citizen involved in the recall or anti-recall efforts, law enforcement officers are also bound by Idaho Code §34-1714, §18-2001. and §18-1701 among others.  Beyond that, since they are public officials, law enforcement officers must be especially careful not to violate  Title 18, US Code, Section 242 – Deprivation of Rights Under Color of Law(more…)

When Was That?

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 8:47 pm

In its online article today headlined Republican group announces endorsements, the Coeur d’Alene Press quoted Brad Corkill, representing the North Idaho Political Action Committee, as saying, ” “Last but not least, Mr. [John] Green has served as legal counsel for Phil Hart, which calls into question how he would interpret and enforce the law as sheriff.”

When did John Green, candidate for Kootenai County sheriff, represent Phil Hart as Hart’s legal counsel?  Corkill’s statement implies that Green is an attorney, however the Idaho State Bar shows no attorney listing for John Green.
