Urban Renewal Corruption

Filed under: General — Dan Gookin @ 3:42 pm

This time, it’s from New Jersey, though the scenario could play anywhere: Corrupt public officials offer public land for sale to developers for pennies on the dollar. The developers then turn around and make millions in profit, kicking a bit back to their government pals as a thank-you.

I’m sure that when critics pointed this out, they were called names by local, left-wing bloggers. And I’m sure the sweet old ladies on the City Council said, “But look at all the good we do!” Yeah, yeah, yeah. But they’re going to jail for “doing good,” thankyouvermuch.

Open Session, Wednesday

Filed under: Open Session — mary @ 11:51 am

We survived Tax Day…now onward. Any comments about the CdA City Council meeting last night? How about Post Falls’ approval of two big development projects or Hayden’s design standards for their new downtown?

Room with a View, but No Clue?

Filed under: General — mary @ 2:20 pm

A brisk discussion was going yesterday under a different topic, and the subject moved to the Audio Visual issues in the new Library’s Community Room.  That’s where the City Council meetings are held now, as well as P&Z and LCDC.  The City gave an additional $100,000 to fund this room, but the technical components were not integrated or designed well.  One high-ranking city official told me there was no input requested from the technical staff during the design process.  Oops.

Open Session, Tax Day

Filed under: Open Session — mary @ 2:03 pm

Is it fair at all that it is SNOWING on Tax Day? Really, haven’t we had enough? And now we have to send Uncle Sam all the money we could use to go somewhere warm and tropical, sit on the beach and sip on something sporting a little umbrella?

Here’s a repeat of the Beatles’ lyrics Tax Man:

Let me tell you how it will be;
There’s one for you, nineteen for me.
‘Cause I’m the taxman,
Yeah, I’m the taxman…
If you drive a car, I’ll tax the street;
If you try to sit, I’ll tax your seat;
If you get too cold, I’ll tax the heat;
If you take a walk, I’ll tax your feet.
Taxman!
Ok, any positive thoughts? Any comments, questions or issues?

Rawls Rolling On

Filed under: General — Dan Gookin @ 9:43 am

I would have respected David Rawls had he decided to run for the legislature (District 3) as a Democrat. But no. The issue reminds me of a famous photo, which I have suitably doctored:

How Much Will the Levy Cost You?

Filed under: Observations — Dan Gookin @ 8:57 am

School District 271 has framed the upcoming levy (May 20 — 7 days before the Primary Election), by stating that it will cost you “only” $1.61 per $1,000 value of your home. Allow me to help you frame that issue regarding your property taxes.

The Park at the Landings

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 11:40 am

Apparently the homebuyers at The Landings at Waterford saw how their neighbors to the east in Sunshine Meadows were treated by the City of Coeur d’Alene, that project’s developers, and some real estate agents.   The Landings folks see that after five years, Sunshine Meadows property owners still do not have the neighborhood park they were promised.  Sunshine Meadows property owners still have just a vacant lot, a promise, and another colored drawing.  So, wisely, the property owners at The Landings are acting. Anyone visiting City Park probably notes the following: The lovely grounds, the Fort Sherman Playground, the Rotary Bandshell, the tree stump art, and the Gazeebo. Oops!
