Separate But Equal Reborn?

Is North Idaho College President Priscilla Bell trying to resurrect the “separate but equal” doctrine handed down in the 1896 US Supreme Court case of Plessy v. Ferguson?     From my perspective, it sure looks like it. (more…)

CLOSED-DOOR “TRANSPARENCY” AGAIN?

Filed under: The City's Pulse — mary @ 8:49 am

Recent national news highlighted our Vice President, Joe Biden, holding a meeting on transparency.  The obvious problem was that it was CLOSED to the media!  Is that the type of government we deserve? One that only pretends to be open and responsive? Certainly not.
But we are getting the same type of mixed message from our local community college board at NIC.  Board chairperson, Christie Wood put her name to a recent letter in the Press, defending the board against complaints that the college is not responsive to public comments, suggestions and concerns; that input from officials and citizens falls on deaf ears.  NIC’s response letter claims these charges are not true; that the college listens and cares.    (more…)

Logjam Continues

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 9:20 am

In spite of freshman Idaho Congressman Walt Minnick’s assurances just under a year ago that Idaho would soon have a new US Attorney, the White House has yet to formally nominate a replacement for the current USA, Tom Moss.

Shortly after taking office, Minnick appointed a committee to recommend qualified candidates.  We do not know the persons whom the committee may have nominated.

According to the website Main Justice, the names most often mentioned being considered are current Idaho Assistant US Attorneys Deborah Ferguson and Wendy Olson.  Minnick, however, says he only identified one candidate to the White House.  We do not know if his choice was either Ferguson or Olson.

So why does Congressional greenhorn Minnick get to make the recommendation?  He is Idaho’s ranking Democrat in Congress.

More Public Corruption Cases of Interest

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 8:07 am

The Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation has posted a few of its public corruption cases of interest for the first quarter of fiscal year 2010.  Among them:

– Former County Sheriff Sentenced for Racketeering Activities

– Construction Company President Sentenced to Prison in Tulsa Public Works Bribery Case

– Former US Army Officer Sentenced to Five Years in Prison for Role in Bribery Conspiracy in al-Hillah, Iraq

– Army Officer, Wife, Relatives Sentenced in Scheme Related to Department of Defense Contracts

– Former Ukranian Prime Minister Sentenced to 97 Months in Prison

– Former Officers of VECO Corporation Sentenced for Roles in Alaska Public Corruption Scheme

The link has the details behind the examples.  It’s safe to say public corruption flourishes wherever there is money to be had and dishonest public officials to exploit it.

Filed under: Open Session — mary @ 8:20 pm

It’s almost Tuesday after a last week and weekend full of local news.  NIC fires its Workforce Training Chief, local business guy Adam Johnson is out of jail and all charges of shooting / attempted murder are dropped, Christie Woods is still the Police Dept Public Info Officer and NIC Trustee Chair.

Any comments, questions or ideas?

The investigation of the circumstances surrounding the election contest filed by Jim Brannon is revealing that Kootenai County’s Chief Elections Officer, Dan English, may also be entitled to claim the title “Psychic.” (more…)

NIC Axes Robert Ketchum

Filed under: General — mary @ 9:35 am

Robert Ketchum, Director of NIC’s Workforce Training was fired Tuesday. I’m told Robert had no idea; that he was called in for some routine meeting and was unexpectedly met with “We don’t need your services anymore.  You will be paid until the end of the year but clean your  desk out by tomorrow.” NIC Trustee Ron Vieselmeyer claims he knew nothing, I’m told, while Christie Wood, who is Chairperson of the Trustee Board, also says she was kept out of the loop.  So who are the true power players?  Well, it’s been said that at least three Trustees must be in favor of any big decisions at the school ( they could also be the drivers of the decision).  So, that leaves Judy Meyer, Mic Armon and Rolly Williams as the folks likely approving or pushing the abrupt firing of Robert Ketchum.

Our readers have already been commenting on this topic on another thread, so I will copy those comments here and we can start this discussion.  What do you think?

Kennedy brings Guinness?

Filed under: General — mary @ 3:19 pm

Apparently, CdA City Councilman Mike Kennedy was on the KVNI morning radio show yesterday.  He was there in an official capacity as a city councilman.  During his on-air conversation with the radio guys, Chris & Norm, MikeK announced he brought them a “Six Pack of Guinness”.  (Beer of course.)  He even said he “might have to come back and share some of it with you later”.

Well, apparently it is ILLEGAL to have any alcohol at a radio station, by FCC rules.  And word on the street is that Chris & Norm are now gone.  They were not on the radio today.  Replacements coming next week.

Do we have helpful elected officials in the City of Excellence?

Slimy…who does this?!

Filed under: General — mary @ 8:39 pm

An alert reader insisted I read the goings on at the Spokane gossip blog.  It is something I avoid with a vengeance, but I went there to see what was so rotten, and I concur.  There were nasty comments and hypothetical scenarios about the meeting Jim Brannon and his lawyer might have with the judge this afternoon.  Who does this?  What normal, functional adult person comes up with these disgusting stories? One of their followers commented that the only thing missing, in the fabricated story, is that a local guy (they named him) who is in jail for a shooting that may or may not be self defense, would come into the courtroom shooting everyone up.  The whole thing is beyond tasteless.  Anyone who posts over there, or even reads it (and gives its lead person the satisfaction of a page hit, which is all he wants), is part of the problem.  Wise up, people.  What you do has consequences.  If you buy into that garbage, or even look,  you are part of it.

City Election Not Over

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 8:30 am

If you read Tom Hasslinger’s article headlined “Despite Brannon’s challenge, election winners to be installed” in the Tuesday, January (corrected) 5, 2010, Coeur d’Alene Press, you might have incorrectly concluded that outcome of the November 3, 2009, city election has been decided.  It has not.
