Correct Information

Those of us who have been out gathering signatures on the petitions for recall of Coeur d’Alene Mayor Sandi Bloem, Council President Mike Kennedy, Councilman Woody McEvers, and Councilman Deanna Goodlander have become accustomed to people expressing both agreement and disagreement with the recall effort.

Sunday afternoon between noon and 4 p.m. my wife and I were twirling recall signs and gathering signatures just north of the Midtown Shopping Center (Safeway, Joann Fabric) between Birch and Miller on 4th Street.  A man whom I recognized as a high-level employee of the Coeur d’Alene Public Library left the shopping center parking lot, and as he drove past me at a distance of 8-10 feet, he shouted, “You’re responsible for taking away my vote, A__h___e!”  Then he went north on 4th and turned right on Birch. Is He Believable?

The More-or-Less Press news/views/skews online posting on May 2 titled County drops suit, wants petitions by June 11 indicated that Secretary of State Ben Ysursa’s letter of May 1 to City Clerk Susan Weathers and County Clerk Cliff Hayes had played an important role in the County’s decision to dismiss its petition for declaratory relief.

In his May 1, 2012, letter, Ysursa stated that his determination [now] is that Recall CdA has some unspecified amount of time but clearly fewer than 75 days to gather valid signatures on its recall petitions. (more…)

Coeur d’Alene’s Ministry of Disinformation

Explaining how the City of Coeur d’Alene could pay off the multimillion dollar wrongful termination judgment awarded to fired former police lieutenant Dan Dixon, Coeur d’Alene City Administrator Wendy Gabriel decreed in Friday’s Coeur d’Alene Press article (Cd’A to appeal court ruling) that because the City is self-insured, it would simply levy a bond on taxpayers.  The news/views/skewspaper article said, “The city could ask a judge to deem the expenditure ordinary or necessary, meaning the city could borrow the money without voter approval, which is usually required when municipalities take on debt.”

That line from the article is factually inaccurate.  Moreover, the article omits some very important information the voter-taxpayers need to know.  (more…)

Laugh … Or Not

Okay, folks.  Let’s hear it for the Idaho Judicial Council. You know who they are, right?  You don’t?  Well, among their duties, one that stands out is “…to nominate to the Governor persons for appointments to vacancies in the Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, and district courts. ”  Wow!  Pretty important stuff.

Except it appears that one of their own members forgot she had been convicted of a felony in federal court, at least according to this from the Idaho Statesman.  Just slipped her mind, and obviously no one else checked.

Nice work, guys and gals on the good ol’ IJC.  Next time, pay attention.

City Policy: Make It Up As You Go Along?

In my January 22nd OpenCdA post titled Policy Question, I asked, “What is the City’s written policy regarding reading citizen letters into the minutes of City Council meetings?”  The question was predicated on the City’s selectively and arbitrarily reading some letters into the minutes of the City Council meetings while rejecting others.

Today’s Coeur d’Alene Press article titled The letters of the law by Tom Hasslinger almost answers the question.  Almost, but not quite. (more…)

Measuring Public Officials’ Performance

Sometimes elected officials’ performance of a seemingly small but statutorily required function can reveal much about their character,  competence, and diligence.

With that in mind, consider this.  Under the heading of “I.  OTHER BUSINESS,” the agenda for the regularly-scheduled December 6, 2011, meeting of the Coeur d’Alene City Council listed “1.  Acceptance of Canvassed Election Results.”  Here is a link to the YouTube video of that segment of the meeting.  Please pay close attention to the words and inflection, facial expressions, and gestures of the Coeur d’Alene Mayor and Council members.

Recalling comments the Coeur d’Alene Mayor and Council members made in the video concerning the conduct of the City’s election by Kootenai County Clerk Cliff Hayes and his staff, now please read Kootenai County Clerk Cliff Hayes’ letter of December 9 sent in response to the Mayor and Council’s conduct at their December 6 meeting .   (more…)

Another Election Oopsie?

[

The 7-day pre-general campaign finance report submitted to Coeur d’Alene City Clerk Susan Weathers by the Washington State Council of County and City Employees was informative as much for Weathers’ “Note to File” attached to it as for the information it contained about who is contributing to Sayler’s, Bruning’s, and Edinger’s campaigns.

Weathers blames Secretary of State Ysursa for once again providing “misinformation” to people trying to follow Idaho’s election and campaign finance laws.   Shades of the 2009 City election.
