How do our taxes stack up?

Filed under: General — mary @ 4:25 pm

I was sent this interesting link to The Tax Foundation’s list of certain state taxes, some of them called “sin taxes”. Here’s how Idaho compares to Washington, Oregon, Montana and Washington DC

………………….SALES TAX………GAS TAX (gal)…….CIGARETTE TAX (pack)…….SPIRIT TAX (gal)

Idaho: ……………6% ………………….0.25 …………………..0.57…………………………. 9.24 (more…)

Open Session, Monday

Filed under: Open Session — mary @ 10:32 am

I was amazed at Jon Mueller’s letter to the Editor in yesterday’s Press. He was obviously angry and wrote some things I’m sure he will regret. Jon’s connections with the City and the money he’s been granted by LCDC may have something to do with his frustration. (more…)

Open Session, Weekend

Filed under: General — mary @ 8:54 pm

I love Hoopfest!  What a great weekend of good, clean, down & dirty streetball.  It’s the largest 3 on 3 basketball tournament in the whole world, and it’s right next door in Spokane.  There are  6,500 teams.  4 people per team, plus all their family and fans…it’s massive.  And Coeur d’Alene is always well represented.  (more…)

POST – Take Note

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 9:02 am

The Idaho Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) is considering a training partnership with Blackwater USA.

In its story headlined ATF seizes weapons from Blackwater, today’s Raleigh News & Observer  reported the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) seized 22 automatic weapons from a Blackwater firearms training facility in North Carolina.

Should the ATF action have any bearing on Idaho POST’s discussions with Blackwater regarding a training facility in Kootenai County?

The “But For” Test

It’s an odd title for a test. Yet this simple two-word qualifier should be a required mantra for all urban renewal officials. “But For” should be embroidered on their shirts, emblazoned on their letterheads and engraved on their office walls. And officials should have to stand and repeat the “But For” test aloud at the beginning of every meeting. (more…)

Open Session, Thursday

Big national news on the 2nd Amendment today! The US Supreme Court upheld an individual’s right to bear arms. But the surprise was the closeness of the vote: 5 to 4. Scary. Any comments about this or other issues?

Bad Judgment

Filed under: Probable Cause — Bill @ 9:08 am

Magistrate judges may be the lowest form of judicial life in Idaho, but standing for a hearing in front of one may be the only contact many people have with the judicial branch.  Consequently, an Idaho magistrate judge’s professional conduct is no less important than that of a US Supreme Court Justice or a state District Court judge.   (more…)

The Lonely Vote

Filed under: General — mary @ 8:29 am

Sue Thilo, our only North Idaho representative, was the lone “yes” vote on the 99 year lease for the Harbor Center by the University of Idaho.   Sue was quoted in this morning’s Press as saying,  “There were other documents other board members were not familiar with. Those we didn’t have access to until 10 minutes before the meeting started and rightfully so, some board members thought they needed more time to review the remaining documents,” Thilo said.”

So, did Sue know more than the others on the board?  If so, why didn’t they get the same info?  If Sue didn’t know more, why would she vote for this measure without enough investigation?
